On the use of heated needle probes for measuring snow thermal conductivity

Kevin Fourteau et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that measuring snow thermal conductivity using heated needle probes can lead to underestimation, likely due to the failure to reach the logarithmic regime during measurement and poor thermal contact between the probe and the snow. To address this issue, the use of fixed needle probes is recommended, and a correction method is proposed to improve the accuracy of the measurements.

Record low sea ice extent in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica in April/May 2019 driven by intense and explosive polar cyclones

B. Jena et al.

Summary: Sea ice extent in the Weddell Sea reached record low levels in April and May 2019, with a decrease of 22% compared to the long-term average. This was driven by intense polar cyclones and associated atmospheric conditions, including high waves and advection of ice. Thermodynamic processes such as heat and moisture anomalies also played a role.

Sea ice extents continue to set new records: Arctic, Antarctic, and global results

Claire L. Parkinson et al.

Summary: The satellite dataset spanning 42 years from 1979 to 2020 reveals recent losses in sea ice coverage in both the Arctic and Antarctic, with the Arctic experiencing record low sea ice extents while the Antarctic has seen record lows since 2015. The data also shows that globally, every calendar month has recorded a new monthly record low within the past 5 years, indicating a rapid decline in global sea ice coverage.

Summary: This study presents a new autonomous platform designed to measure snow depth and other parameters on drifting Arctic and Antarctic sea ice. The dataset includes 79 time series since 2013, showing regional differences in the annual cycle of snow depth on sea ice.

Spatially distributed simulations of the effect of snow on mass balance and flooding of Antarctic sea ice

Nander Wever et al.

Summary: Southern Ocean sea ice has significant spatial variability in snow and ice thickness, leading to uncertainties in determining the amount of flooding. Utilizing a physics-based multi-layer snow/sea ice model in a one-dimensional and distributed mode can provide more accurate predictions of flooding.

Recent observations of superimposed ice and snow ice on sea ice in the northwestern Weddell Sea

Stefanie Arndt et al.

Summary: The recent decrease in summer sea ice extent in the Weddell Sea has led to questions about the contributions of dynamic and thermodynamic atmospheric and oceanic energy fluxes. Research findings show that snow depth, superimposed ice, and snow ice play important roles in the ice's energy balance, and their properties have remained relatively constant in the past decades. Additional analyses using atmospheric reanalysis data and satellite observations indicate limited recent changes in the summer energy balance and melt onset.
