More than heavy rain turning into fast-flowing water - a landscape perspective on the 2021 Eifel floods

Michael Dietze et al.

Summary: Rapidly evolving floods have severe impacts on landscape reorganisation and society. The July 2021 flood in western Germany and Belgium was a drastic event due to its coupling of landscape elements and the carried wood, sediment, and debris. Intense floods can reveal rare non-linear feedbacks and require improved anticipation, mitigation, and system understanding. This study analyzes the 14-15 July 2021 flood and identifies hillslope processes, debris mobilisation, human land use, and emerging process connections as critical dimensions.

Detection and potential early warning of catastrophic flow events with regional seismic networks

Kristen L. Cook et al.

Summary: Early warning is crucial for mitigating the impacts of large mass wasting and flood events in the Himalaya. By utilizing data from a dense seismic network in Uttarakhand, India, researchers found that a seismic monitoring system could detect and provide early warnings for extreme flow events, helping to reduce the impact of landslides and floods.

Risk perception of climate change and natural hazards in global mountain regions: A critical review

Stefan Schneiderbauer et al.

Summary: Mountains are highly sensitive to climate change, providing essential ecosystem services for surrounding regions and lowlands. A warmer climate negatively impacts water supply, biodiversity, and natural hazard protection in mountainous areas. Changes in these services affect social-ecological systems in the mountains and influence communities' risk perception and responses to changing climate conditions.

Machine learning and earthquake forecasting-next steps

Gregory C. Beroza et al.

Summary: The new generation of earthquake catalogs developed through supervised machine learning provides detailed insights into earthquake activity. Applying unsupervised machine learning to analyze the complete seismicity expression in these catalogs may offer the fastest route to improving earthquake forecasting.
