Volumetric and shear strain localization throughout triaxial compression experiments on rocks

Jessica McBeck et al.

Summary: In this study, the localization processes of volumetric and deviatoric strains in twelve triaxial compression experiments were quantified using X-ray tomography. It was found that rocks typically experience strain localization towards failure, with the maximum degree of localization occurring at 90% of the failure stress. Volumetric strain tends to localize more than deviatoric strain.

The influence of spatial resolution and noise on fracture network properties calculated from X-ray microtomography data

Summary: The study reveals that fracture network properties extracted from X-ray synchrotron experiments are influenced by spatial resolution and noise, with fracture surface area being the most significantly affected aspect.

The influence of preexisting host rock damage on fault network localization

Jessica McBeck et al.

Summary: The transition from stable to unstable fracture propagation is influenced by interactions and linkages between fractures. The addition of diffuse damage can lead to more complex fault geometries, affecting the localization behavior of the fault network. Models with more diffuse damage experience delocalization phases, which can increase mechanical efficiency of the system by reducing shear stress.

Fracture Network Localization Preceding Catastrophic Failure in Triaxial Compression Experiments on Rocks

Jessica McBeck et al.

Summary: The study reveals that in the compression process of rocks, the fracture network gradually localizes, but phases of delocalization interrupt this trend, and the proportion of the maximum fracture volume does not increase monotonically, with higher confining stress leading to greater localization. Experiments with different rock types show that monzonite is more prone to localization than granite.

Effect of Saturation and Image Resolution on Representative Elementary Volume and Topological Quantification: An Experimental Study on Bentheimer Sandstone Using Micro-CT

Ruotong Huang et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of the representative elementary volume (REV) in understanding porous media, showing how different wetting-phase saturations affect porosity, specific interfacial area, and topological measures. Results also emphasize the impact of image resolution and voxel size on REV analysis.

Digital rock physics, chemistry, and biology: challenges and prospects of pore-scale modelling approach

Saeid Sadeghnejad et al.

Summary: Conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon rocks have complex pore structures, where digital twins can be used to quantify their properties and predict flow transport at the pore scale. Digital rock chemistry and biology come into play when fluid-rock interactions or microbial activities are involved.

The competition between fracture nucleation, propagation, and coalescence in dry and water-saturated crystalline rock

Jessica A. McBeck et al.

Summary: During the development of fracture networks in crystalline rock, three modes of fracture growth – nucleation, isolated propagation, and coalescence – lead to distinctive geometric attributes that control permeability and fluid-rock interactions. Experiments show that the growth of preexisting fractures dominates the nucleation of new fractures, while fracture propagation has a greater influence on fracture networks than coalescence.
