DOC and nitrate fluxes from farmland; impact on a dolostone aquifer KCZ

G. Medici et al.

Summary: This study focuses on quantifying fluxes of DOC and nitrate in farmland, using the Transect Method to calculate mass fluxes in groundwater. The research found that localized contamination significantly impacts groundwater chemical concentrations and identified the vulnerable contamination zone. Future modeling efforts should target this shallow vulnerability zone and the Transect Method can be used to define boundary conditions.

Groundwater flow velocities in karst aquifers; importance of spatial observation scale and hydraulic testing for contaminant transport prediction

Giacomo Medici et al.

Summary: The study reviews the scale dependence of hydraulic conductivities and effective porosities in UK karst aquifers for contaminant transport prediction. Different methods for obtaining hydraulic parameters were discussed, and it was found that effective porosities assumed for transport modelling were often overestimated. The study suggests using values in the range of 0.01-1% for such aquifers to avoid underestimation of groundwater velocities.

Hydrogeochemistry and Groundwater Quality Assessment in the High Agri Valley (Southern Italy)

M. Paternoster et al.

Summary: The High Agri Valley in southern Italy is a large basin affected by intensive agricultural and industrial activities. The study conducted in this valley revealed that groundwater is primarily meteoric in origin and the quality is influenced by both geogenic and anthropogenic factors. Factors such as dolomite and silicate dissolution play a significant role in determining water chemistry, while trace element distribution is mainly natural-driven. However, some well waters used for irrigation purposes have critical nitrate concentrations linked to agricultural activities.

Sources of Nitrate in Ground Water Aquifers of the Semiarid Region of Tanzania

Rita Alex et al.

Summary: Nitrate isotopic values are commonly used to identify sources of nitrate for managing groundwater quality. This study in Singida and Manyoni Districts found that most nitrates originated from sewage effluents and/or organic wastes, with groundwater sources in densely populated areas potentially impacted by poor sanitation facilities.
