Cyanobacteria and moss biocrusts increase evaporation by regulating surface soil moisture and temperature on the northern Loess Plateau, China

Shenglong Li et al.

Summary: Soil evaporation is a crucial process that affects various soil processes and global climate change. Biocrusts, as important ecological barriers, strongly influence soil properties and have significant effects on surface soil hydrological processes. However, the impact of biocrusts on soil evaporation and water budget in drylands remains unclear.

Effects of moss biocrusts on near-surface soil moisture are underestimated in drylands: Insights from a heat-pulse soil moisture sensor

Shenglong Li et al.

Summary: Accurate measurement of soil moisture is crucial for understanding water balance in drylands. In this study, the performance of a heat-pulse sensor and three common dielectric sensors in measuring surface soil moisture was assessed. Results showed that the heat-pulse sensor outperformed the dielectric sensors in accurately measuring the moisture differences between moss-dominated biocrusts and bare soil. This highlights the vital role of biocrusts in the surface water balance of drylands.

Soil water content and soil temperature modeling in a vadose zone of Andosol under temperate monsoon climate

Kassu Tadesse Kassaye et al.

Summary: Model applications for delivering reliable information on soil water content and soil temperature specific to Andosols are still limited. The HYDRUS-1D model showed good performance in predicting soil water content and temperature in Andosols. Specifying soil layer-specific hydraulic parameters can significantly improve the model's fit, while water vapor has a negligible impact on total water flux and soil temperature dynamics.

Moss-dominated biocrusts enhance water vapor sorption capacity of surface soil and increase non-rainfall water deposition in drylands

Shenglong Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of biocrusts on vapor sorption capacity and non-rainfall water (NRW) deposition on surface soils in the Chinese Loess Plateau. The results showed that biocrusts significantly increased vapor sorption and NRW deposition, which in turn had feedback impacts on surface soil water and heat balances, enhancing microbial activity and nutrient adsorption in drylands.

Biocrusts enhance non-rainfall water deposition and alter its distribution in dryland soils

Shenglong Li et al.

Summary: Non-rainfall water deposition is an important water resource for dryland ecosystems, with biocrusts significantly impacting the capacity and distribution of non-rainfall water. Biocrusts were found to influence soil water balance through faster rates of water formation, higher condensation from atmospheric and soil sources, and greater non-rainfall water amount occurring in the top 3 cm of soil. These effects on non-rainfall water deposition were attributed to biocrust influences on soil properties.
