Effects of Wood Ash-Based Alkaline Treatment on Nitrogen, Carbon, and Phosphorus Availability in Food Waste and Agro-Industrial Waste Digestates

Alejandro Moure Abelenda et al.

Summary: Managing food waste and agro-industrial waste digestates, as well as fly and bottom wood ashes, poses economic and environmental challenges, but they can also be utilized as slow-release fertilizers for crops; The addition of high alkaline biomass ash can stabilize digestates, with the concentrations and conversions of nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus being strongly influenced by the pH of the blends.

Assessing the Effects of Digestates and Combinations of Digestates and Fertilizer on Yield and Nutrient Use of Brassica juncea (Kai Choy)

Jacqueline Jamison et al.

Summary: The anaerobic digestion of organic wastes produces digestates, which can be used as fertilizer and soil amendment. Research mainly focuses on the fertilizer value of digestates, but there is a lack of information on their additional effects on plant growth. This study found that combinations of digestates and fertilizer can perform as well as or slightly better than the fertilizer control, with higher nitrogen use efficiency in some cases. LBD can partially replace mineral fertilizers, while FWD can fully replace nitrogen applications without significant negative effects on plant growth. Increasing the use of digestates in agriculture can provide incentives for the anaerobic digestion process and produce valuable products for both energy and fertilizer.
