Effect of high soil C/N ratio and nitrogen limitation caused by the long-term combined organic-inorganic fertilization on the soil microbial community structure and its dominated SOC decomposition

Jiwen Cui et al.

Summary: The application of organic-inorganic fertilizers affects soil microbial community structure, leading to microbial resource imbalance, especially under N-limiting conditions in the treatments of SNPK and MNPK. Nitrogen limitation further influences soil microbial community structure and SOC decomposition. N limitation also enhances the ratio of bacterial functional genes, promoting recalcitrant SOC degradation.

Ecological insights into assembly processes and network structures of bacterial biofilms in full-scale biologically active carbon filters under ozone implementation

Lei Li et al.

Summary: This study focused on examining the temporal dynamics of bacterial communities in full-scale BAC filters after ozone implementation, and revealed that stochastic processes became more crucial in determining bacterial community assembly in the summer and autumn seasons. The study also identified relatively high levels of bacterial functional redundancy in BAC filters, with significantly higher degrees observed in the summer and autumn seasons after ozone implementation.

The stronger impact of inorganic nitrogen fertilization on soil bacterial community than organic fertilization in short-term condition

Meiling Zhang et al.

Summary: Geographic location plays a major role in shaping the structure of soil bacterial communities, while the impact of sampling season and fertilization practice is relatively minor. Inorganic nitrogen fertilizer has a greater impact on bacterial community structure than organic nitrogen fertilizer, but the specific changes depend on geographic location.

Abundant fungal and rare bacterial taxa jointly reveal soil nutrient cycling and multifunctionality in uneven-aged mixed plantations

Haidong Xu et al.

Summary: Uneven-aged mixed plantations showed significant improvements in soil C, N, P cycling, and SMF indices compared to monoculture plantations. Soil fungal diversity and biomass were more sensitive to stand structure changes over a short period, while fungal and bacterial communities play different roles in maintaining nutrient cycling and SMF. Abundant fungal taxa, such as Mucoromycota and Mortierellomycota, were found to be major drivers of SMF.

Agroecosystem diversification with legumes or non-legumes improves differently soil fertility according to soil type

Marie Sauvadet et al.

Summary: Diversifying plant communities through crop rotation or agroforestry shows positive effects on soil fertility in tropical agroecosystems, with outcomes varying depending on soil type and presence of legumes in the community. Legumes are beneficial for volcanic soils, while communities without legumes are more effective in Ferralsols. Overall, multifactorial and multi-sites experiments are crucial for designing optimal plant diversification in agroecological systems.

Effect of Fe3+ on the sludge properties and microbial community structure in a lab-scale A2O process

Lanhe Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that an appropriate concentration of Fe3+ can enhance the removal efficiencies of COD and TN in wastewater treatment, while excessive concentration may lead to inhibition. Furthermore, the positive correlation between Fe3+ concentration and TP removal was attributed to the increased surface roughness for enhanced phosphorus adsorption onto activated sludge. Thauera was identified as the dominant bacterial genus, and certain bacteria showed good adaptability to high concentration of Fe3+ within the bacterial community. Gene families related to Carbohydrate Metabolism, Amino Acid Metabolism, Cell Motility, Membrane Transport, and Replication and Repair were found to be the most abundant functional genes in the metabolic pathways.

Does the ratio of β-1,4-glucosidase to β-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminidase indicate the relative resource allocation of soil microbes to C and N acquisition?

Taiki Mori et al.

Summary: The study found that the BG:NAG ratio does not necessarily indicate the carbon or nitrogen limitation status of soil microbes. Contrary to the assumption, nitrogen-enriched conditions did not always lead to an increase in the BG:NAG ratio compared to ambient conditions. Instead, the ratio may be influenced by the decomposition stage and target substrates of the NAG enzyme.
