Chemical characteristics of iron meteorite parent bodies

Connor D. Hilton et al.

Summary: The projected relative abundances of highly siderophile elements (HSE) in different magmatic iron meteorite groups show no significant differences between noncarbonaceous and carbonaceous parent bodies. However, the absolute abundances of HSE, reflecting the core size, are more variable and higher in carbonaceous bodies compared to noncarbonaceous bodies. The chemical compositions and size of the cores are linked to the distribution of iron within the parent body, which is controlled by its oxidation state.

fractionation during core formation

E. Kubik et al.

Summary: The Fe isotopic compositions of mantles of differentiated inner solar system bodies are similar to or heavier than those of chondritic meteorites. Core-mantle differentiation is a potential contributor to planetary isotopic fractionation. However, our novel metal-silicate equilibrium experiments demonstrate that nickel content does not significantly affect the isotopic fractionation of Fe during core formation.

Contemporary formation of early Solar System planetesimals at two distinct radial locations

A. Morbidelli et al.

Summary: By modeling the evolution of a disk with ongoing material accretion, researchers demonstrate that planetesimal formation may have occurred within the first 0.5 million years by dust pile-up at both the snowline and the silicate sublimation line. Planetesimals at the two locations formed almost simultaneously, but there are distinct differences in the initial percentage of material absorption between those formed at different locations.

Nitrogen isotope fractionation during magma ocean degassing: tracing the composition of early Earth's atmosphere

C. Dalou et al.

Summary: Understanding the evolution of nitrogen concentration and isotopic composition during the degassing of Earth's magma ocean is crucial for understanding the development of habitable conditions on Earth. Experiments were conducted to determine the variations of nitrogen content, nitrogen speciation, and nitrogen isotopic composition in a magma ocean analogue. The results suggest that the atmosphere in equilibrium with a reduced magma ocean would be nitrogen-depleted, while with increasing magma ocean oxygen fugacity, the primitive atmosphere would become more enriched in nitrogen gas.

Structure of differentiated planetesimals: A chondritic fridge on top of a magma ocean

Cyril Sturtz et al.

Summary: Meteorites are considered as remnants of early planetary bodies and can provide insights into the processes that occurred in the first few million years of the solar system. The discovery of the EC002 achondrite suggests that partial melting of a chondritic source happened about 1 million years before other known achondrites. However, previous thermal models cannot explain the preservation of chondritic material. In this paper, a refined thermal model is proposed to interpret the petrological and geochemical constraints provided by differentiated meteorites.

Nitrogen isotope evidence for Earth's heterogeneous accretion of volatiles

Lanlan Shi et al.

Summary: The origin of major volatiles in planets, particularly nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur, is crucial for understanding planetary formation and differentiation. Studies have shown that Earth may have acquired its major volatile inventory through the impact of various types of materials before and during the Giant Moon-forming impact.

Origin of Nitrogen Isotopic Variations in the Rocky Bodies of the Solar System

Damanveer S. Grewal

Summary: This study investigates the N isotopic compositions of noncarbonaceous and carbonaceous meteorites and finds that the compositions are mainly determined by the accretion ages and peak metamorphic temperatures of the parent bodies, rather than being indicative of isotopically heterogeneous primitive N reservoirs in the protosolar disk. The findings provide insights into the origin and evolution of the solar system.

Internal or external magma oceans in the earliest protoplanets - Perspectives from nitrogen and carbon fractionation

Damanveer S. Grewal et al.

Summary: Protoplanets formed within -1 Ma of the Solar System's formation underwent large-scale melting due to the heat released by the decay of 26Al. The nature of the magma ocean of a differentiating protoplanet (IMO or EMO) determines the abundances of N and C in its core and mantle reservoirs. Comparison of N and C abundances in chondrites with their peak metamorphic temperatures suggests that protoplanetary interiors could lose a substantial portion of their N and C inventories with increasing degrees of thermal metamorphism.

The fate of nitrogen during parent body partial melting and accretion of the inner solar system bodies at reducing conditions

Rajdeep Dasgupta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stability of nitrogen-bearing phases and the solubility of nitrogen in silicate melts and minerals in highly reduced systems. The results suggest that nitrogen is less compatible under highly reducing conditions and can migrate from deeper reservoirs to shallower ones through degassing or precipitation of nitrogen-bearing solid phases.

Nucleosynthetic Pt isotope anomalies and the Hf-W chronology of core formation in inner and outer solar system planetesimals

Fridolin Spitzer et al.

Summary: The Hf-182-W-182 chronology of iron meteorites provides important insights into the accretion and differentiation timescales of some of the oldest planetesimals in the Solar System. Correcting for cosmic ray exposure-induced modifications of W isotopes using Pt isotopes reveals anomalies in some ungrouped iron meteorites that lead to revisions of previously reported Hf-W model ages. The revised ages suggest that core formation in non-carbonaceous and carbonaceous iron meteorite parent bodies occurred at different timescales, with CC cores forming later and under more oxidizing conditions.

A very early origin of isotopically distinct nitrogen in inner Solar System protoplanets

Damanveer S. Grewal et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the earliest formed protoplanets in the inner and outer protoplanetary disk accreted isotopically distinct nitrogen, suggesting differences in nitrogen isotopic composition between the inner and outer Solar System. The nitrogen in Earth and other rocky planets represents a mixture of material from both the inner and outer Solar System.

Nitrogen isotope fractionations among gaseous and aqueous NH4+ NH3, N2, and metal-ammine complexes: Theoretical calculations and applications

Long Li et al.

Summary: Ammonium, ammonia and N-2 are key nitrogen species in geological nitrogen recycling, with ammonia playing an important role in mobilizing base metals in hydrothermal fluids. The nitrogen isotope fractionation factors are essential parameters in tracing source signatures and geochemical properties. However, the fractionation factors for metal-ammine complexes are largely unknown, highlighting the complex behavior of nitrogen isotopes in natural hydrothermal systems.

First-principles calculations of equilibrium nitrogen isotope fractionations among aqueous ammonium, silicate minerals and salts

Yonghui Li et al.

Summary: Nitrogen isotopes have been shown to be a powerful tool for studying the geological nitrogen cycle between Earth's reservoirs. This study used first-principles methods to calculate nitrogen isotope fractionations among common minerals in Earth's lithosphere, revealing significant differences in fractionations between nitrate and ammonium groups, as well as smaller fractionations within the ammonium group. The results suggest that nitrogen isotopes can be used to trace material sources and infer geochemical processes, but caution is needed to consider the fractionation differences between different minerals.

Summary: The impact of protoplanetary differentiation on life-essential volatiles such as nitrogen and carbon remains uncertain. Early volatile depletion on planetesimals inferred from C-S systematics of iron meteorite parent bodies

Marc M. Hirschmann et al.

Summary: During the formation of terrestrial planets, volatile loss can occur through various processes such as nebular processing, planetesimal differentiation, and planetary accretion. Iron meteorites are studied as a record of volatile loss during planetesimal processing, revealing that significant open-system silicate melting and volatile loss are crucial in shaping the volatile inventory of terrestrial planets. The composition of parent body cores, characterized by different C/S ratios, suggests that processes affecting composite silicate/iron planetesimals play a key role in shaping volatile compositions.
