Direct ammonia low-temperature symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells with composite semiconductor electrolyte

Jiaqi Qian et al.

Summary: In this study, a low-temperature symmetrical solid oxide fuel cell with Ni-NCAL vertical bar SDC/NCAL vertical bar Ni-NCAL (70 SDC:30 NCAL) configuration was successfully constructed, exhibiting higher peak power densities and excellent catalytic activity in ammonia and hydrogen. The difference in cell output can be attributed to the additional ammonia decomposition steps compared to hydrogen. The symmetrical cell with SDC/NCAL semiconductor electrolyte and Ni-NCAL electrodes showed better electrochemical performance at low temperature.

Summary: This article comprehensively reviews the electrochemical performances and stabilities of SOFCs operating on various fuels. Although comparable power densities to hydrogen were frequently obtained, degradation problems induced by these fuels influence the long-term stable operation of SOFCs. Potential strategies from three perspectives of thermodynamics, kinetics and structure are proposed to solve degradation issues. The remaining challenges and future prospects of SOFCs fed by each fuel are separately elaborated.

Summary: This study proposes a nickel doping strategy to address the challenges faced by anode-supported protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). By using a small amount of nickel as a sintering aid, the sintering of proton-conducting oxides can be improved, and detrimental reactions between the anode and the electrolyte can be suppressed. Nickel doping also promotes the formation of Ni nanoparticles, enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of the anode and improving charge transfer.
