Rapid detoxification of dioxin and simultaneous stabilization of targeted heavy metals: New insight into a microwave-induced pyrolysis of fly ash

Yongming Ju et al.

Summary: In this study, a newly-proposed single-mode Microwave (MW)-based Hagenmaier process using Thiourea (TU) as inhibitor effectively inhibited the regeneration of dioxin and detoxified fly ash, reducing processing time by 81.5%. Synchrotron radiation analysis verified the sulfidation of targeted heavy metals and proposed a fundamental mechanism for the process. Additionally, unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants were also detoxified by the MW-based pyrolysis process.

Stability evaluation of potentially toxic elements in MSWI fly ash during carbonation in view of two leaching scenarios

Weihua Li et al.

Summary: Carbonation treatment by alkaline fly ash affects the stability of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), increasing the leachability of PTEs, especially in acetic acid leaching. The formation of carbonate minerals in the ash matrix can decrease the environmental risk level of PTEs, but excessive carbonation can lead to an increase in environmental risk due to decalcification. Both natural and accelerated carbonation increase the potential environmental risk of PTEs in the carbonated fly ash matrix.

Early solidification/stabilization mechanism of heavy metals (Pb, Cr and Zn) in Shell coal gasification fly ash based geopolymer

Yuchi Chen et al.

Summary: The use of SFA-based geopolymer for immobilizing heavy metals from MSWIFA can effectively address energy and environmental challenges. The early immobilization mechanisms involve heavy metals retention in aluminosilicates, trapping of Pb and Zn by gel structure, as well as reduction of Cr and its involvement in geopolymerization process.

Effect of Si/Al additives on Cl fate during MSWI fly ash thermal treating process

Guiyun Yang et al.

Summary: SiO2 and Al2O3 are suitable additives for municipal solid waste incineration fly ash melting. The addition of SiO2 or Al2O3 significantly promotes the release of HCl. SiO2 has an obvious effect on reducing Cl percentage in residues, while Al2O3 is more likely to retain Cl in the residues.

Effect of Ca-Si-Al Element Proportion on the Formation of Aluminosilicate Minerals and Detoxification of PAHs in Fly Ash from MSW Incineration during the Hydrothermal Process

Dezhi Shi et al.

Summary: The formation of aluminosilicate minerals during hydrothermal treatment can significantly affect the detoxification efficiency of PAHs in fly ash, with different Ca/(Si + Al) and Al/(Si + Al) ratios impacting the formation of specific minerals such as tobermorite. Among these ratios, the Al/(Si + Al) ratio has a more significant influence on both tobermorite synthesis and the removal of PAHs and their toxicity equivalent quality. Additionally, the presence of hydrocalumite can reduce the detoxification efficiency of PAHs, highlighting the importance of controlling mineral formation during the hydrothermal detoxification process.

Influence of pretreatments on accelerated dry carbonation of MSWI fly ash under medium temperatures

Qinyang Gu et al.

Summary: The dry gas-solid carbonation of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash was studied to achieve harmless treatments. Pre-treatments such as washing and calcination affected the carbonation process, with washed fly ash reaching a maximum CaCO3 content of 88% at 550 ℃. Carbonation at temperatures between 400 ℃ and 450 ℃ was found to meet the requirements for safe treatment of MSWI fly ash.
