Synthesis of ethyl levulinate from cellulose over a double acid site catalyst

Zhihang Huang et al.

Summary: A novel double acid site solid catalyst (Al-OCS-0.1) with an ordered mesoporous structure was synthesized by grafting sulfonic acid groups on an oxidized ordered mesoporous carbon (OOMC) support and loading 10% Al-2(SO4)(3). The catalyst was used to catalyze the synthesis of ethyl levulinate from cellulose in ethanol and achieved an extremely high yield of 50.8 mol%.

Coupled Transfer Hydrogenation and Alcoholysis of Furfural To Yield Alkyl Levulinate over Multifunctional Zirconia-Zeolite-Supported Heteropoly Acid

Lincai Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, a bifunctional zirconia-zeolite-supported heteropoly acid catalyst was successfully designed to convert furfural to alkyl levulinate through a one-pot conversion combining transfer hydrogenation and alcoholysis. The selectivity towards alkyl levulinate was observed to be strongly influenced by the distribution of acid sites, with the HPMo(20)/Zr-MCM-41 catalyst showing high efficiency with isopropanol as a hydrogen donor. This monolithic catalyst exhibited good stability and could be reused multiple times without significant change in product yield.

Efficient alcoholysis of furfuryl alcohol to n-butyl levulinate catalyzed by 5-sulfosalicylic acid

Wenguang Zhao et al.

Summary: The study highlights the urgent need to study the utilization of biomass energy to solve environmental problems caused by the excessive use of fossil fuels. By catalyzing the conversion of furfuryl alcohol to n-butyl levulinate using 5-sulfosalicylic acid, nearly complete conversion of furfuryl alcohol and high selectivity of n-butyl levulinate were achieved under optimal conditions. A possible mechanism for the alcoholysis of furfuryl alcohol was proposed based on experimental results, providing a promising pathway for alkyl levulinates synthesis over economical and environmentally benign catalysts.

Cooperation between hydrogenation and acidic sites in Cu-based catalyst for selective conversion of furfural to γ-valerolactone

Yuewen Shao et al.

Summary: This study achieved a unprecedented yield of 90.5% in the direct conversion of biomass-derived furfural to GVL through consecutive hydrogenation and acid-catalyzed reactions over CuAl and a co-catalyst (i.e. H-ZSM-5) in ethanol. The abundance of hydrogenation sites and acidic sites plays a key role in determining the reaction network and product transfer, with different mechanisms of deactivation for the acid and hydrogenation catalysts needing consideration in future catalyst development.

Liquid fuel from waste tires: novel refining, advanced characterization and utilization in engines with ethyl levulinate as an additive

Akhil Mohan et al.

Summary: Pyrolysis is an effective thermochemical strategy for converting scrap tires into diesel-like fuels, with upgraded tire pyrolysis oil demonstrating improved physicochemical properties and performance characteristics when blended with diesel in a single-cylinder engine. The addition of a biomass-derived fuel oxygenate, ethyl levulinate, can further enhance the cold-flow properties and reduce exhaust emissions of the fuel blends. A fuel blend containing 50% diesel, 40% upgraded TPO, and 10% ethyl levulinate showed the best fuel properties in the engine tests.
