Evolution of char structure during the pyrolysis of biomass pellet: Further understanding on the effects of chars two phases

Yuanjing Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of char and its impact on thermochemical processes of biomass by preparing sawdust powder and pellet chars at various pyrolysis temperatures. The results indicate that pellet chars have more stable radicals and aromatic structures in extractable components than powder chars at the same temperature, leading to enhanced reactions and the formation of recombined compounds such as lipid compounds with increasing temperatures. The study highlights the importance of understanding the chemical composition and characteristics of different types of chars for optimizing biomass thermochemical processes.

Progress in application of the pyrolytic lignin from pyrolysis of biomass

Lijun Zhang et al.

Summary: Bio-oil, produced by the pyrolysis of biomass, is a mixture of condensable volatiles. The effective conversion of bio-oil to biofuel faces the key challenge of coke formation, especially at high temperatures. Pyrolytic lignin, derived from the lignin fraction in biomass, is a major component of the heavy organics in bio-oil, and understanding its properties is crucial for various applications and conversions.

Temporal and spatial evolution of biochar chemical structure during biomass pellet pyrolysis from the insights of micro-Raman spectroscopy

Yuanjing Chen et al.

Summary: The study revealed two stages of pellet pyrolysis: the decomposition of raw biomass and the condensation reactions of aromatic ring systems. The axial and radial heterogeneity of char chemical structure is mainly caused by heat transfer during uniform heating of the whole pellet, while mass transfer can eliminate this heterogeneity through volatile-char interaction. The combined effects of heat and mass transfer lead to a heterogeneity in pellet char chemical structure.
