An insight into the molecular structure of sulfur compounds and their reactivity during residual oil hydroprocessing

Jiamin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular structure of sulfur compounds in residual oils and their desulfurization reactivity during the RHT process. It showed that different classes of sulfur compounds exhibit varied reactivity, with S1 class compounds being more refractory and 52/53 class compounds easier to remove. The research provides insights into the complex desulfurization chemistry in the RHT process.

Unraveling the molecular-level structures and distribution of refractory sulfur compounds during residue hydrotreating process

Jiamin Zhao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that volatile PASHs are present in lower quantities in the products of residue hydrotreating process, while the major refractory sulfur compounds are identified as S1 class compounds. Furthermore, collision-induced dissociation experiments showed that the key refractory PASHs have a structure of alkyl (C2)-substituted DBT.

Summary: The study found that sulfur-containing compounds in oil were transformed into HC compounds after hydrodesulfurization, and the fragility of molecules to collision-induced dissociation increased. The most significant structural changes corresponded to HC compounds with DBE of 7.

Surrogate formulation and molecular characterization of sulfur species in vacuum residues using APPI and ESI FT-ICR mass spectrometry

Abdul Gani Abdul Jameel et al.

Summary: VR is a byproduct of crude oil vacuum distillation, primarily used for the production of syn-gas, hydrogen, heavy fuel oil for power generation and shipping. Due to its high sulfur content, desulfurization is necessary according to emission standards. Detailed molecular characterization of sulfur species in VR can be achieved using high-resolution FT-ICR MS, enabling classification and understanding of the sulfur structures present.
