Catalytic hydrothermal liquefaction of municipal sludge assisted by formic acid for the production of next-generation fuels

Claudia Prestigiacomo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the addition of formic acid in the hydrothermal liquefaction process of municipal sludge at high loading can significantly improve the yield and quality of biochar, leading to efficient energy recovery. Additionally, the synergistic use of heterogeneous catalysts and formic acid can also enhance the yield and quality of biochar, although carbon fouling on the catalyst's surface may occur at higher concentrations.

Dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene with CO2 over porous Co/Al2O3-ZrO2 catalyst

Yongfeng Li et al.

Summary: The Co-containing catalysts supported on super-microporous Al2O3-ZrO2 with different Al/Zr molar ratios showed that the catalytic performance was highly influenced by the textural and chemical properties. Among them, the 2.5Co/AZ(0.7) catalyst with intermediate acidity, high surface area, and high metal dispersion exhibited the best performance in the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene with CO2.

Effective Cu/Re promoted Ni-supported γ-Al2O3 catalyst for upgrading algae bio-crude oil produced by hydrothermal liquefaction

Kanokthip Pongsiriyakul et al.

Summary: The catalytic hydrotreating of algae bio-crude oil using different Ni-based catalysts showed improvements in eliminating sulfur, decreasing nitrogen and oxygen contents, and increasing the higher heating value of bio-oil. The Ni-Cu-Re/gamma-Al2O3 ternary alloy catalyst offered the best overall performance with the highest upgraded bio-oil yield and energy recovery in the upgrading process.

The effect of ethanol as a homogeneous catalyst on the reaction kinetics of hydrothermal liquefaction of lipids

Andres Chacon-Parra et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising waste management technology for producing renewable crude from wet biomass and bio-waste, but the properties of HTL crude differ significantly from fuel-oil products. Utilizing ethanol as a co-solvent and catalyst under acid pH conditions can reduce crude oil acidity by promoting the alcoholysis of lipids and FFA.Activation energy for hydrolysis, transesterification, and esterification reactions under HTL conditions were investigated using sunflower oil as a model lipid.
