Kinetic model assessment for the synthesis of γ-valerolactone from n-butyl levulinate and levulinic acid hydrogenation over the synergy effect of dual catalysts Ru/C and Amberlite IR-120

Jose Delgado et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the hydrogenation of levulinic acid and butyl levulinate over Ru/C and Amberlite IR-120, evaluating different kinetic models to describe the system. This study fills the gap in the literature by examining the simultaneous hydrogenation of LA and AL in one-pot.

Bimetallic Ni-Co/γ-Al2O3 catalyst for vapour phase production of γ-valerolactone: Deactivation studies and feedstock selection

Murali Kondeboina et al.

Summary: The addition of Ni to Co/γ-Al2O3 catalyst enhances the catalytic activity and coke resistance capacity of the resulting bimetallic catalyst, resulting in the formation of Ni-Co alloy as evidenced by XRD, H-2-TPR, and XPS analyses. TEM analyses show that smaller particles are formed in the bimetallic Ni-Co/γ-Al2O3 catalyst, influencing the rate of GVL formation. Furthermore, among the GVL feedstocks, ethyl levulinate proves to be the most consistently yielding GVL over the bimetallic Ni-Co/γ-Al2O3 catalyst during a 24-hour study.

Efficient hydrogenation of levulinic acid catalysed by spherical NHC-Ir assemblies with atmospheric pressure of hydrogen

Lingyun Shen et al.

Summary: A practical, efficient, and mild hydrogenation method for levulinic acid to gamma-valerolactone was successfully achieved using single-sited 3D porous self-supported N-heterocyclic carbene iridium catalysts under 1 atm H-2. The catalyst exhibited quantitative yields and selectivities at low loading, and could be reused for 9 runs without significant loss of selectivity or activity.

Levulinic acid hydrogenation to γ-valerolactone over single Ru atoms on a TiO2@nitrogen doped carbon support

Kaili Zhang et al.

Summary: By designing and preparing a Ru single-atom catalyst, the conversion of levulinic acid into gamma-valerolactone with high activity, selectivity, and stability at room temperature in water was achieved. The turnover frequency (TOF) was increased by 35 times compared to commercial Ru/C, and only gamma-valerolactone was produced over the catalyst in this study.
