A critical evaluation of novel demulsifying agents based on acrylic terpolymers for Mexican heavy crude oils dehydration

Jessica V. Fuentes et al.

Summary: A novel random acrylic terpolymer based on butyl acrylate, 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate, and 2-carboxyethyl acrylate monomers showed efficient demulsifying properties in heavy crude oils with stable water-in-oil emulsions. The best water removal performance was achieved with terpolymers containing 90-80% of the hydrophobic monomer B and small amounts of the hydrophilic monomers Ae and Ce. The correlation between molecular parameters of the terpolymers and physicochemical parameters of the crude oils allows for accurate prediction of water removal efficiency, aiding in selecting the best demulsifier for a specific petroleum stream.

Ultrasound-assisted desalination of crude oil: The influence of mixing extent, crude oil species, chemical demulsifier and operation variables

Wen-Shing Chen et al.

Summary: The coalescence of water droplets in crude oil can be effectively promoted by combining chemical demulsifiers with ultrasound. The expansion of water droplets reached 118% after 40 minutes of ultrasonic irradiation under well mixing conditions. However, water droplets in heavy crude oil showed less aggregation compared to those in light crude oil due to the resistance of mobility in highly viscous fluid. Factorial design analysis revealed that the optimal operating conditions for crude oil desalination assisted by ultrasound were as follows: acoustic power intensity = 300 W, operation temperature = 90℃, ultrasonic irradiation time = 75 minutes, and chemical demulsifier dosage = 54 mg/L. Additionally, temperature was found to be the most influential parameter, followed by acoustic power intensity, ultrasonic irradiation time, and chemical demulsifier dosage.

Experimental study on the key influencing factors of phase inversion and stability of heavy oil emulsion: Asphaltene, resin and petroleum acid

Wanfen Pu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of asphaltene, resin, and petroleum acid on the phase inversion, stability, and oil-water interface characteristics of emulsions. The synergy of asphaltene and resin is found to be the key to the emulsion phase inversion, with the optimal ratio being 1:3. The addition of petroleum acid accelerates the phase inversion process. Asphaltene and resin synergistically reduce the interfacial tension of oil and water, while excessive resin increases the interfacial tension by competing with asphaltene for adsorption. The addition of petroleum acid significantly decreases the interfacial tension. Asphaltene has a greater influence on the expansion modulus than resin, and the synergistic effect of asphaltene and resin increases the expansion modulus. However, the addition of petroleum acid decreases the expansion modulus due to its small molecular weight. The synergy of asphaltene and resin enhances the emulsion stability, with asphaltene playing a pivotal role in stabilizing the emulsion. On the other hand, the addition of petroleum acid severely destroys the emulsion stability.

Demulsification of saline-in-crude oil via biocompatible cellulose derivative polymers

Milad Agah et al.

Summary: In this study, carboxymethyl cellulose (Walocel) and methyl cellulose-E5 were found to be more effective for deionized water-in-crude oil demulsification. The presence of ions slowed down the demulsification of Methocel-E5 more than that of Walocel, likely due to the different hydrogen bond strength and van der Waals interactions with water molecules. The polar 2-hydroxypropyl substitutes in Methocel E5 resulted in much less effective saline demulsification compared to Walocel.
