Vision and Visuomotor Performance Following Acute Ischemic Stroke

Chamini Wijesundera et al.

Summary: This study investigates the value of tablet-based vision and visuomotor capacity assessment in acute mild-moderate ischemic stroke patients. The results showed that these assessments provide an easy and rapid bedside measure that complements existing clinical assessments. The study suggests that the low correlation between visual function, NIHSS scores, and lesion site offers an expanded clinical view of changes following stroke.

Resolution of impaired multisensory processing in autism and the cost of switching sensory modality

Michael J. Crosse et al.

Summary: The study reveals that deficits in multisensory processing observed in high-functioning children and teenagers with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are not evident in adults with the disorder. Computational modelling shows a delayed transition of multisensory processing from competition to facilitation in ASD. The findings highlight the complex and dynamic interplay among sensory systems that differ in individuals with ASD.

Does multisensory study benefit memory for pictures and sounds?

Diane Pecher et al.

Summary: Studies have found that there is a memory benefit in multisensory learning, where unimodal test items that were studied as bimodal items have higher recognition accuracy. However, under specific conditions, there is also a benefit in memory performance when there is overlap in format between study and test, particularly if sound is the task-relevant modality.

Reduced multisensory facilitation exists at different periods of development in autism

Kirsty Ainsworth et al.

Summary: Atypical sensory processing is a key component of autism diagnosis, with autistic individuals showing reduced multisensory facilitation compared to neurotypical individuals across different age groups. The study highlights the influential effect of basic perceptual atypicalities on the development of higher-level skills in autism.

Shifting attention between modalities: Revisiting the modality-shift effect in autism

Daniel Poole et al.

Summary: Selective attention to sensory modalities has been observed in studies, with similar shift costs found between autistic individuals and neurotypical controls. However, autistic participants showed reduced shift costs in drift rates compared to neurotypicals, indicating differences in the quality of information extracted from stimuli between the two groups.

Narrative review of the multisensory integration tasks used with older adults: inclusion of multisensory integration tasks into neuropsychological assessment

Joana O. Pinto et al.

Summary: This review examines the characteristics and utility of multisensory integration (MI) tasks in functional and cognitive assessment of older adults. Most studies show that older adults have an advantage in terms of integration time window. In older adults with mild cognitive impairment or major neurocognitive disorder, the size of visual-somatosensory integration plays a mediating role in neurocognitive impairment and spatial aspects of gait.

The Age-Related Changes in Speed of Visual Perception, Visual Verbal and Visuomotor Performance, and Nonverbal Intelligence During Early School Years

Rana J. Alghamdi et al.

Summary: The study found that the speed and accuracy of information processing in children develop with age, but only RAN and SLURP rates show significant improvement with years of schooling. RAN and SLURP also correlated significantly with nonverbal IQ scores, while months of formal schooling provide additional contributions to specific skills' processing speed development.

A multisensory perspective onto primate pulvinar functions

Mathilda Froesel et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the contribution of the pulvinar to multisensory integration, suggesting that the pulvinar combines multiple sources of sensory information to enhance fast responses to the environment and acts as a general regulation hub for adaptive and flexible cognition.
