Unifying mechanism behind the onset of acquired epilepsy

Yuri Zilberter et al.

Summary: Acquired epilepsy can be caused by various brain insults and neurological diseases, all of which result in epileptiform activity in the brain. The vicious cycle of oxidative stress and glucose hypometabolism, mediated by NADPH oxidase, is proposed as the underlying cause of AE. Understanding these mechanisms can help identify therapeutic targets for epileptogenesis prevention.

Summary: Sulforaphane, a naturally occurring Nrf2 activator, demonstrates neuroprotective effects in epilepsy pathology by reducing ROS generation, restoring antioxidant levels, and preventing neuronal cell death.
