The optimal drought index for designing weather index insurance

Janic Bucheli et al.

Summary: Climate change increases the need for better insurance solutions for farmers to cope with drought risks. Weather index insurance based on different drought indices can reduce financial risk exposure for winter wheat producers in Eastern Germany. Tailoring the underlying drought index individually for each farm can achieve the largest risk reduction, implying insurers should offer farm-specific underlying drought index insurance.

Anthropogenic climate change has slowed global agricultural productivity growth

Ariel Ortiz-Bobea et al.

Summary: Historically, agricultural productivity has grown, but the impact of climate change on this growth is unclear. Over the last 60 years, anthropogenic climate change has decreased global agricultural total factor productivity by 21%, with stronger effects in warmer regions. Global agriculture is becoming more vulnerable to ongoing climate change.

The Impacts of Warming Temperatures on US Sorghum Yields and the Potential for AdaptationJEL codes

Noah Miller et al.

Summary: The study found that sorghum is highly sensitive to warming temperatures, with a 2-degree Celsius increase resulting in an average 24% reduction in yields, casting doubt on its potential to offset climate change impacts relative to other crops. While sorghum producers may be able to mitigate warming impacts through adjustments during the growing season, there is little support for this form of adaptation in practice.

Insuring crops from space: the potential of satellite-retrieved soil moisture to reduce farmers' drought risk exposure

Willemijn Vroege et al.

Summary: By utilizing satellite-retrieved soil moisture data to design farm individual soil moisture index insurances, crop producers can significantly reduce drought risk exposure, outperforming insurances based on soil moisture estimates from meteorological measurements at ground stations. Insurers and policy makers are encouraged to develop better suited insurances to increase farmers' resilience in a changing climate.

Quantifying the impacts of compound extremes on agriculture

Summary: Research shows that compound hydroclimatic extremes are better predictors of corn yield variations, wet heat is more damaging to corn, and yield damage from heat stress is up to four times more severe when combined with water stress.
