Effects of ultrasound on the degradation kinetics, physicochemical properties and prebiotic activity of Flammulina velutipes polysaccharide

Jinrong Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ultrasonic degradation process, physicochemical properties, and prebiotic activity of ultrasonic degraded Flammulina velutipes polysaccharides (U-FVPs). The results showed that increasing ultrasonic intensity led to faster degradation, and reducing polysaccharide concentration contributed to degradation. Ultrasound changed the solution conformation and stability of the polysaccharide, resulting in decreased viscosity and gel strength but improved thermal stability. U-FVPs exhibited better prebiotic activity compared to the original polysaccharides.

Bioactive polysaccharides from red seaweed as potent food supplements: a systematic review of their extraction, purification, and biological activities

Si-Min Qiu et al.

Summary: Most marine macroalgae have bioactive compounds, red seaweeds in particular are rich sources of bioactive polysaccharides with various physiological and biological activities. However, the lack of comprehensive information and human clinical trials on red seaweed polysaccharides limits their industrial-scale utilization in functional foods. This review summarizes recent information on the extraction, purification, biological activities, and molecular principles of red seaweed polysaccharides, providing a basis for further research on their structure, mechanisms, and applications in functional foods.

Digestion & fermentation characteristics of sulfated polysaccharides from Gracilaria chouae using two extraction methods in vitro and in vivo

Xiong Li et al.

Summary: The study compared the digestion and fermentation characteristics of sulfated polysaccharides extracted from Gracilaria chouae using critic acid extraction and water extraction methods. While water extraction polysaccharides showed lower glycemic index values, critic acid extracted polysaccharides exhibited higher molecular weight and GI values during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion.

Structural characteristics and anti-inflammatory activity of UV/H2O2-treated algal sulfated polysaccharide from Gracilaria lemaneiformis

Yufeng Gong et al.

Summary: UV/H2O2 treatment significantly reduced the molecular weight and particle size of GLP, decreased the content of total sugars, uronic acids and proteins, and modified its surface morphology, showing the potential to enhance the anti-inflammatory activity of algal sulfated polysaccharides.
