The use of analytical techniques coupled with chemometrics for tracing the geographical origin of oils: A systematic review (2013-2020)

Haroon Elrasheid Tahir et al.

Summary: The global market for imported, high-quality priced foods has grown significantly in the past decade, leading to a stronger demand for accurate origin labeling of food products. This review discusses the efforts made in using analytical tools and multivariate analysis for the verification of the geographical origin of oils, as well as trends in geographical authentication research and preferred journals for dissemination. Overall, this article provides a useful guideline for the food industry and quality control authorities in selecting appropriate methods for authenticating oils.

Geographical authentication of virgin olive oil by GC-MS sesquiterpene hydrocarbon fingerprint: Verifying EU and single country label-declaration

Beatriz Quintanilla-Casas et al.

Summary: According to the report from the EU Food Fraud Network, olive oil is one of the most reported products. A classification model based on chemical fingerprint was developed to distinguish between EU and non-EU olive oils, achieving a high accuracy rate.

Emerging trends in olive oil fraud and possible countermeasures

Enrico Casadei et al.

Summary: A review of common types of fraud in the olive oil sector was completed, revealing that the most common infringements involved mislabeling virgin olive oil as extra virgin and blending other vegetable oils with olive oil. An online survey highlighted emerging issues related to fraud, including the addition of deodorized oil and mixing with oil obtained by a second centrifugation of olive paste. National contact points in the EU Food Fraud Network identified mixing with lower quality olive oils as the most frequent fraudulent practice and emphasized the need for more control activities in cases involving EU, non-EU, and mixed oils to prevent false designations of origin.

Varietal authentication of virgin olive oil: Proving the efficiency of sesquiterpene fingerprinting for Mediterranean Arbequina oils

Berta Torres-Cobos et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the suitability of sesquiterpene hydrocarbon (SH) fingerprint as a cultivar marker for Virgin olive oil (VOO), focusing mainly on Mediterranean Arbequina oils. The study analyzed the SH profile of over 400 VOOs from 6 countries and built classification models to distinguish 'Arbequina' oils from other cultivars with a promising overall correct classification rate of 95.1% in external validation.

ROC curves for the optimization of one-class model parameters. A case study: Authenticating extra virgin olive oil from a Catalan protected designation of origin

Itziar Ruisanchez et al.

Summary: A methodology based on ROC curves is proposed to optimize classification model parameters, successfully applied to authenticate the geographical origin of extra-virgin olive oils. By setting the threshold class value, the sensitivity and specificity of the model were improved.
