Continuous-flow stereoselective reduction of prochiral ketones in a whole cell bioreactor with natural deep eutectic solvents

Francesca Annunziata et al.

Summary: Immobilized whole cells of Rhodotorula rubra MIM147 were used in a packed bed flow reactor for enantioselective reduction of beta-ketonitriles and efficient production of a key building block for the synthesis of the antidepressant drug duloxetine. A choline chloride-glucose natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) was employed as a co-solvent and glucose source for cofactor regeneration, with an in-line purification procedure developed. The optimized protocol allowed the obtainment of (S)-beta-hydroxynitriles with >95% conversion and excellent enantiomeric excess in 80 minutes of residence time.

An efficient and robust continuous-flow bioreactor for the enzymatic preparation of phytosterol esters based on hollow lipase microarray

Liujia Xu et al.

Summary: A continuous-flow bioreactor packed with well-organized lipase microarrays was developed for the sustainable synthesis of functional lipid-phytosterol esters (PEs). The use of hollow mesoporous silicon spheres for lipase immobilization, with hydrophobic modification, led to excellent catalytic activity and stability. The densely packed lipase microarrays offered large specific surface areas and guaranteed thorough interaction between the lipase and substrates in the continuous-flow bioreactor, resulting in high conversion rates and record-breaking PEs synthesis.

Biocatalytic Approaches for an Efficient and Sustainable Preparation of Polyphenols and Their Derivatives

Martina Letizia Contente et al.

Summary: Polyphenols, found widely in nature and typically extracted from plants, have gained increased interest in industries like food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. These molecules can undergo biotransformations in the human body after dietary intake, leading to compounds with different bioactivities. Enzyme-catalyzed reactions are a suitable method for producing modified polyphenols, which can enhance bioactivity and be labeled as green, natural products. This review discusses the potential of biocatalysis in modifying polyphenols to improve their properties and presents the main transformations occurring during their metabolism in the human body.

Enzymatic Synthesis of Lipophilic Esters of Phenolic Compounds, Evaluation of Their Antioxidant Activity and Effect on the Oxidative Stability of Selected Oils

Bartlomiej Zieniuk et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the effect of substituents and their positions in the aromatic ring on the antioxidant activity of hexanoic acid esters. It was found that the presence and position of the hydroxyl group in the aromatic ring determined the antioxidant activity, with vanillyl alcohol, vanillyl hexanoate, and BHT showing the highest activities. Additionally, vanillyl hexanoate at concentrations of 0.01% and 0.1% enhanced the oxidative stability of sunflower and rapeseed oils, extending their induction times significantly.
