Total Analysis of the Major Secoiridoids in Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Validation of an UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS Method

Julian Lozano-Castellon et al.

Summary: Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is rich in nutritional and antioxidant compounds compared to other vegetable oils, making it an important component of the Mediterranean diet. This study developed a simple UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS method for quantifying secoiridoids in EVOO, overcoming challenges posed by their complex transformations during production and analysis. Validation of the method according to AOAC guidelines showed satisfactory results in terms of matrix effect and recoveries.

Tissue Distribution of Oleocanthal and Its Metabolites after Oral Ingestion in Rats

Anallely Lopez-Yerena et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of oleocanthal and its metabolites in rat plasma and tissues after the ingestion of refined olive oil. Oleocanthal was mainly detected in the stomach and intestine samples, with concentrations decreasing over time. Ten metabolites were identified, with the small intestine and liver serving as the most important metabolizing organs. The main circulating metabolites were identified as OLC + OH + CH3 and OLC + H2O + glucuronic acid, which may contribute to the health benefits associated with the regular consumption of extra virgin olive oil. Additional research is needed to determine the concentrations and molecular structures of these metabolites in human plasma and tissues.

Metabolomics Technologies for the Identification and Quantification of Dietary Phenolic Compound Metabolites: An Overview

Anallely Lopez-Yerena et al.

Summary: Phenolic compounds have been identified as beneficial for human health, but their identification and quantification is challenging due to their wide range of properties and lack of reference standards. Metabolomics analysis often combines mass spectrometry and NMR technologies. This review summarizes pre-analytical separation processes for plasma and urine samples, quantitative and qualitative analysis of phenolic compounds metabolites, and compares targeted and non-targeted approaches for future metabolomics studies.

LC-ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS for Profiling the Distribution of Oleacein and Its Metabolites in Rat Tissues

Anallely Lopez-Yerena et al.

Summary: Using LC-ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS analysis, this study found that oleacein (OLEA) and its metabolites were distributed in various tissues, with unmetabolized OLEA notably present in the heart, suggesting potential implications for cardiovascular disease prevention. The detection of high levels of hydroxytyrosol (OH-TY) and OLEA + CH3 in the small intestine, liver, and plasma, as well as the identification of nine OLEA metabolites, provides deeper insights into the metabolism and tissue distribution of OLEA, contributing to the understanding of its health effects.

Levels of polyphenols and phenolic metabolites in breast milk and their association with plant-based food intake in Hong Kong lactating women

Zhou Lu et al.

Summary: This study assessed the levels of dietary polyphenols in the breast milk of Hong Kong lactating women and found that maternal intake of plant-based foods significantly affects breast milk phenolic composition. Despite suboptimal intake of fruits and vegetables among participants, breast milk phenolic levels were comparable to those of foreign populations.
