Multi-omics analysis reveals metabolism of okadaic acid in gut lumen of rat

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of Okadaic acid (OA) on the metabolism of gut bacteria in rats were analyzed using a multi-omics strategy and rRNA high-throughput technology. The study found that OA had significant effects on gut bacteria, causing changes in dominant genera and bacterial function genes. It was also discovered that OA could be transformed into other metabolites, such as dinophysistoxin-2 (DTX-2), in the gut. The findings provide important insights into the complex toxicity of OA and its environmental fate.

The effects of okadaic acid-treated SH-SY5Y cells on microglia activation and phagocytosis

Prateep Amonruttanapun et al.

Summary: The activation of microglia may be induced by the neurotoxicity of neurons, potentially contributing to the pathogenesis of AD. Although OA did not show cytotoxicity towards microglial cells, it may affect their function by increasing the expression of Iba1. Cells treated with OA-induced SH-SY5Y cells showed increased tau hyperphosphorylation, indicating a potential toxic role of OA in microglia in AD.

DSP Toxin Distribution across Organs in Mice after Acute Oral Administration

M. Carmen Louzao et al.

Summary: Okadaic acid and its structural analogs DTX1 and DTX2 are marine lipophilic phycotoxins that can cause diarrheic shellfish poisoning. Studies found a dose-dependency in gastrointestinal absorption of these toxins and a different toxicokinetic pathway between them. The highest toxin concentration was detected in the stomach 24 hours post-administration, providing information for human safety assessment.

Serotonin involvement in okadaic acid-induced diarrhoea in vivo

M. Carmen Louzao et al.

Summary: Ingestion of contaminated shellfish can lead to diarrhoeic shellfish poisoning, with symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The toxins in shellfish are Ser/Thr phosphatase inhibitors, potentially affecting the nervous system. Further studies suggest a possible involvement of serotonin in OA-induced poisoning.

Exploring the impact of intestinal ion transport on the gut microbiota

Amy C. Engevik et al.

Summary: The relationship between gut microbiota and host physiology is complex, with host factors exerting selective pressure on microbial communities in different regions of the gastrointestinal tract. While the influence of the intestinal microbiome on the host is well-established, the reciprocal interaction of the host on the microbiome remains a less explored area. This review focuses on how host intestinal ion transport influences the luminal environment and modulates gut microbiota composition.
