Responses of Barley to High Ambient Temperature Are Modulated by Vernalization

Helga Ochagavia et al.

Summary: Climate change-induced rising temperatures affect cereal crop development. This study explored the developmental responses of barley to temperature increase and identified the interaction between flowering time, vernalization, and specific genes. The findings provide valuable information for breeding high-yielding cultivars adapted to future climatic conditions.

Transpiration increases under high-temperature stress: Potential mechanisms, trade-offs and prospects for crop resilience in a warming world

Walid Sadok et al.

Summary: As climate change intensifies, the frequency and intensity of high-temperature stress events are expected to increase, along with a global increase in evaporative demand. Studies have found that plants can increase transpiration rate in response to high-temperature stress, leading to a trade-off between latent heat dissipation and water conservation. Research is needed to investigate the mechanisms behind plant responses to high-temperature stress and design new crop varieties for enhanced productivity under warmer and drier climates.

Structural rearrangements in wheat (1BS)-rye (1RS) recombinant chromosomes affect gene dosage and root length

Gilad Gabay et al.

Summary: Understanding the genes controlling root development is crucial for engineering root systems adapted to different soil types. In wheat, the 1RS.1BL wheat-rye translocation is associated with improved drought tolerance and a large root system. However, a mutant line carrying an interstitial segment of wheat chromosome arm 1BS in the distal region of the 1RS arm showed reduced grain yield and shorter roots. The study found that the dosage of duplicated 1RS genes is critical for seminal root length, emphasizing the importance of gene dosage in root development.

Heat Shock Tolerance in Deschampsia antarctica Desv. Cultivated in vitro Is Mediated by Enzymatic and Non-enzymatic Antioxidants

Rodrigo Cortes-Antiquera et al.

Summary: Antarctic hair grass (Deschampsia antarctica) is a successful colonizing species on a cold continent. With the increasing frequency of heat waves in Antarctica due to climate change, populations of D. antarctica are responding positively, showing increased numbers and sizes. When subjected to heat shock treatments, D. antarctica plants are capable of tolerating higher temperatures without visible damage, thanks to efficient enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems maintaining redox balance.

Cold Conditioned: Discovery of Novel Alleles for Low-Temperature Tolerance in the Vavilov Barley Collection

Ahmad H. Sallam et al.

Summary: Research has shown that planting winter or facultative type barley cultivars in autumn can help escape the adverse effects of high summer temperatures on crops. By evaluating genetic material from the N. I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry, new sources of winter hardiness have been identified and utilized in breeding programs to improve winter barley varieties.

The neglected other half - role of the pistil in plant heat stress responses

Yuanyuan Wang et al.

Summary: Heat stress during the reproductive stage can significantly reduce the viability of reproductive organs, leading to lower seed-set and crop productivity. While the impact of heat stress on the male reproductive organ (pollen) is studied more frequently, recent studies suggest that the female reproductive organ (pistil) may also be vulnerable to heat stress, with some cases showing even greater vulnerability of the pistil compared to the pollen.

Crop breeding for a changing climate: integrating phenomics and genomics with bioinformatics

Jacob I. Marsh et al.

Summary: The translation of research findings into climate smart crops in the field relies on advances in bioinformatics to harness data from vast phenomics and genomics datasets. High-throughput phenotyping and genomics technologies play a crucial role in providing information for guiding the breeding of climate smart crops adapted to the environment. Bioinformatics is essential for integrating and exploiting the accumulating wealth of data for detection of genomic targets underlying key adaptive climate-resilient traits.
