Dermanyssus gallinae: the long journey of the poultry red mite to become a vector

Antonella Schiavone et al.

Summary: Studies have found an association between the poultry red mite and various pathogens, suggesting its potential role as a vector for infectious diseases. This comprehensive review critically describes the available strategies and methods for investigating the relationship between the red mite and pathogens, aiming to provide researchers with useful tools.

Light sheet fluorescence microscopy for the investigation of blood-sucking arthropods dyed via artificial membrane feeding

Lars ten Bosch et al.

Summary: This study used light sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) to investigate the anatomy of blood-sucking arthropods in vivo, specifically focusing on the human louse. The results demonstrated that fluorescence staining coupled with LSFM is a powerful and straightforward method for studying the morphology, including anatomy, of blood-sucking lice and other arthropods.

Dermanyssus gallinae in non-avian hosts: A case report in a dog and review of the literature

Barbara Moroni et al.

Summary: The study describes the first Italian case of dermanyssosis in a dog and molecularly characterizes the mites collected from the patient and the animal enclosure. The need for more awareness amongst practitioners is highlighted, as well as the potential therapeutic effect of antiparasitic drugs currently used off-label in non-avian hosts.

Case of Human Infestation with Dermanyssus gallinae (Poultry Red Mite) from Swallows (Hirundinidae)

Georgios Sioutas et al.

Summary: Dermanyssus gallinae, known as the poultry red mite, is a significant ectoparasite in the laying hen industry and can also infest humans, causing a skin disease called gamasoidosis. A recent case study in Greece identified human gamasoidosis linked to a nest of swallows, confirming the spread of PRM from birds to humans.

Impact of plasma irradiation on Tribolium castaneum

Waheed A. A. Sayed et al.

Summary: Radio frequency plasma (RFP) is a reliable and cost-effective method for controlling insect pests in stored food products. The sensitivity of Tribolium castaneum to RFP was tested using argon (Ar) and helium (He) gases, with He RFP being more efficient. The optimal exposure time for complete mortality of all stages was found to be 90 seconds with He RFP.

Effect of cold plasma on insect infestation and keeping quality of stored wheat flour

Swapnil A. Sutar et al.

Summary: Cold plasma has been utilized as an alternative technology for pest control of stored commodities. In this study, wheat flour was treated with cold plasma at different power levels and time intervals to examine its effectiveness in pest control and impact on flour quality. The results showed a significant increase in insect larvae and pupae mortality, as well as reduced lipase enzyme activity and oxidation of fats, suggesting that cold plasma can be a novel technology to enhance the quality of stored food products.

Cold plasma for insect pest control: Tribolium castaneum mortality and defense mechanisms in response to treatment

Summary: The insecticidal properties and mechanisms of high-voltage air-based atmospheric cold plasma using a contained dielectric barrier discharge reactor were investigated against Tribolium castaneum. The treatment was effective in achieving high mortality rates for preadult stages within seconds, although longer exposure was needed for adult insects. Cold plasma treatment not only reduced respiration rate and weight of insects, but also impacted oxidative stress markers in adult populations, offering a potential route to integrated pest management while maintaining grain quality retention.
