Prediction of the droplet size distribution in aerodynamic droplet breakup

Isaac M. Jackiw et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of rim and bag breakup in aerodynamic droplets, identifying three main modes contributing to the breakup sizes and proposing a new relationship between the dominant breakup mechanisms and the size distribution. It is shown that different instabilities and collision mechanisms play a role in the breakup of the rim, leading to a reasonable prediction of the droplet size distribution.

An experimental investigation on the secondary breakup of carboxymethyl cellulose droplets

Lijuan Qian et al.

Summary: Secondary breakup of Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) droplets in a continuous air jet flow is studied experimentally, with results showing consistent breakup modes with water droplets but significant differences in breakup results. The influence of effective Ohnesorge number on the evolution and maximum deformation of CMC droplets in different breakup modes is discussed, and correlations for these characteristics are developed. A breakup regime map of CMC droplets is produced based on the Weber number and effective Ohnesorge number.

Experimental investigation of droplet breakup of oxide-forming liquid metals

T. Hopfes et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the breakup of liquid metal droplets, finding differences in behavior between Field's metal and Galinstan droplets, but also noting similarities in certain aspects within a specific range. Results could be generalized to represent other oxide-forming metals and provide insights for numerical studies or improvements to breakup models.

On secondary atomization and blockage of surrogate cough droplets in single- and multilayer face masks

Shubham Sharma et al.

Summary: Face masks can prevent the transmission of infectious respiratory diseases by blocking large droplets and aerosols. Single or double-layer masks may not effectively block the penetration of large droplets, leading to their atomization into smaller droplets that can remain airborne. Therefore, three-layer masks may be more effective in preventing the spread of these droplets.

Effects of elasticity number and time constant ratio on breakup and droplet formation of viscoelastic planar liquid sheet co-flowing with gases of equal velocities

Debayan Dasgupta et al.

Summary: The study explores the effects of velocity ratios, elasticity numbers, and time constant ratios on the stability of a viscoelastic liquid sheet. It finds that the interactions between these parameters can lead to dual effects, influencing the formation of droplets of different sizes. The results highlight the complex relationships between various parameters in determining the behavior of the liquid sheet.
