Valorization of Posidonia-Oceanica leaves for the building insulation sector

Insaf Mehrez et al.

Summary: A new bio-composite material made from Posidonia-Oceanica leaves is proposed for building thermal insulation. Results show that the fiber loading has a significant impact on the mechanical and thermal characteristics, and alkali treatment can improve the compressive and flexural strength of the bio-composites. The proposed bio-composite has low thermal conductivity and acceptable mechanical performances, making it a suitable option for thermal insulation material.

Thermal insulation potential of wood-cereal straws/plaster composite

Insaf Mehrez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of low-cost natural fibers (wood fiber and straw fiber) loaded in plaster for thermal insulation applications in buildings. The results show that this composite material can reduce thermal conductivity and thermal capacity while also reducing the weight of the material.

Preparation and characterization of expanded perlite/wood-magnesium composites as building insulation materials

Yunfei Lin et al.

Summary: A novel thermal insulation composite composed of expanded perlite (EP)/wood-magnesium (EPWMC) was prepared to improve strength and water resistance, reduce thickness swelling, and broaden the scope of use in wet conditions. The composites also exhibited excellent flame retardant and smoke suppression properties, making them ideal building insulation materials for exterior or interior walls.

Utilization of decayed wood for polyvinyl chloride/wood flour composites

Shengbo Ge et al.

Summary: The study found that decayed wood plastic composites with chitosan exhibited better properties than decayed wood plastic composites without any additive, and even better than sound wood plastic composites. Adding chitosan to decayed wood powder and PVC improved the performance of the DWPC, reaching the level of sound wood plastic composites. This work proposed a novel green strategy for utilizing decayed wood for making polyvinyl chloride/wood flour composites.

Effect of forced convection on the hygrothermal performance of a wood frame wall with wood fibre insulation

Nora Schjoth Bunkholt et al.

Summary: This study investigates the moisture conditions in wood-frame walls with wood fibre thermal insulation, finding that wood fibre insulation has the benefit of distributing and absorbing moisture, while the use of an exterior air barrier with high thermal resistance can reduce moisture levels in the wall construction, thus reducing the risk of mold growth.

Wood-reinforced composites by stereolithography with the stress whitening behavior

Shuyang Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, poplar wood flour at different concentrations was incorporated into a methacrylate-based resin via solution blending to fabricate wood-reinforced composites using SLA 3D printing. The addition of wood flour improved the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the printed composites, while causing stress whitening during uniaxial drawing. This research demonstrates the potential of using wood flour in SLA 3D printed WPC to reinforce products with a modest loading amount.
