Creating Dynamic Nanospaces in Solution by Cationic Cages as Multirole Catalytic Platform for Unconventional C(sp)-H Activation Beyond Enzyme Mimics

Kang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the accomplishment of multirole and multi-way cage-confined catalysis by creating dynamic nanospaces in solution using highly charged positive coordination cage of [Pd-6(RuL3)(8)](28+). The biomimetic cage effect enables versatile functions and anomalous reactivities, and the amphoteric heterogeneity generated by partial deprotonation of imidazole-NHs on cage sphere enhances cavity-basicity against solution-acidity. The synergistic actions of cage hydrophobicity, host-guest electrostatic interactions, and imidazole-N coordination facilitate various catalytic reactions and phase transfers, providing a useful catalytic protocol that combines the merits of different types of catalysis.

Combining Excellent Selectivity with Broad Target Scope: Biosensing with Arrayed Deep Cavitand Hosts

Wenwan Zhong et al.

Summary: Water-soluble, self-folding deep cavitands can overcome the trade-off between selectivity and scope in traditional macrocyclic host-based biosensing. These hosts have flexible structures and large cavities that can bind to various fluorescent dyes, causing fluorescence enhancement or quenching upon binding. By utilizing the affinity of the hosts for NMe3+ groups, site-selective recognition of post-translational lysine methylations can be achieved. Additionally, these hosts can selectively recognize serine phosphorylation, lysine acetylation, and arginine citrullination through non-cavity-based interactions with charged biomolecules.

Enantioselective Tail-to-Head Terpene Cyclizations by Optically Active Hexameric Resorcin[4]arene Capsule Derivatives

Daria Sokolova et al.

Summary: This study presents the first examples of optically active hexameric resorcin[4]arene capsules and demonstrates the possibility of chirality transfer inside a relatively large molecular container. These capsules are able to enantioselectively catalyze tail-to-head terpene cyclizations and exhibit surprisingly high sensitivity to structural modifications.

Aqueous polyaromatic receptors for biomolecules with high selectivity

Lorenzo Catti et al.

Summary: Mimicking the selective binding ability of biological receptors has been a challenge for synthetic chemists. This review focuses on recent advancements in the development of capsule and cage-type polycyclic aromatic/aromatic receptors that exhibit high selectivity for various biomolecules in aqueous media. The observed selectivities are a result of multiple receptor-biomolecule interactions in confined artificial cavities.
