Recent advances in nanomedicines for photodynamic therapy (PDT)-driven cancer immunotherapy

Bin Ji et al.

Summary: Cancer immunotherapy has shown great progress in advanced-stage malignancies, but low response rates and immunosuppressive tumor microenvironments limit its effectiveness. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) can induce immunogenic cell death and enhance immune responses. Recent nanomedicine-based strategies have improved the efficiency of PDT and immunotherapy, and synergistic nanotherapeutics have been used to amplify immune responses. Challenges and future expectations in PDT-driven cancer immunotherapy are discussed.

Molecular Targets of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: Where Do We Stand?

Emma E. Newton et al.

Summary: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly aggressive subtype of breast cancer, which is more likely to metastasize and resist treatment than other forms of breast cancer due to its heterogeneity and lack of hormone receptor expression. Chemotherapy and surgery have been the main treatment options for TNBC, but resistance to chemotherapy and tumor recurrence are common. Emerging immunotherapies targeting immune pathways and other therapeutic options inhibiting key cellular growth pathways have shown promising results in improving survival for TNBC patients. Continued research on immunotherapy and neoadjuvant therapy is expected to change the treatment course for TNBC in the future.

Selective Photo-Assisted Eradication of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cells through Aptamer Decoration of Doped Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles

Luis Exequiel Ibarra et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) may be a promising alternative for the treatment of breast cancer, especially for aggressive types like triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). A recent study explored the use of conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) as photosensitizers for targeted PDT. By attaching unique 2'-Fluoropyrimidines-RNA-aptamers to the surface of CPNs, the researchers aimed to improve the selectivity of the treatment for TNBC cells. Results showed that CL4, sTN29, and sTN58 aptamers were effective in selective tumor targeting and improving PDT efficacy in TNBC cells.

Clinical significance of HER2-low expression in early breast cancer: a nationwide study from the Korean Breast Cancer Society

Hye Sung Won et al.

Summary: HER2-low breast cancer and HER2-IHC 0 breast cancer have different clinicopathological characteristics and survival outcomes. HER2-low breast cancer is more common in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer but is associated with a high lymph node ratio and positive lymphatic invasion in triple-negative breast cancer. HER2-low breast cancer shows significantly better breast cancer-specific survival compared to HER2-IHC 0 breast cancer. These findings suggest that the biology and clinical impact of low HER2 expression may vary according to the hormone receptor status.
