Immunoreactivity of ICAM-1, MMP-2, and Nesfatin-1 in lens epithelial cells of patients with diabetes mellitus with or without diabetic retinopathy

Meydan Turan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the immunoreactivity of matrix metalloproteinases-2 (MMP-2), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and nesfatin-1 in cataract lens epithelial cells (LECs) of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). The results showed increased MMP-2 and ICAM-1 immunoreactivity in LECs of DM patients, especially those with diabetic retinopathy (DR), and significantly lower nesfatin-1 immunoreactivity in LECs of diabetic patients.

VEGF-targeting drugs for the treatment of retinal neovascularization in diabetic retinopathy

Alessandro Arrigo et al.

Summary: Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes that can cause visual impairment. Anti-VEGF therapies have significantly improved the management of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The role of anti-VEGF as a substitute for laser treatment or as a combination therapy is still debated. Overall, anti-VEGF treatments are considered the first-line choice for diabetic retinopathy management.

Subclinical Hypothyroidism in Patients with Diabetic Retinopathy: Role of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor

Amr A. El-Sehrawy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between Subclinical Hypothyroidism (SCH) and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) levels in patients with Diabetic Retinopathy (DR). The results showed that DR patients with SCH had older age, longer diabetes duration, higher HbA1c, insulin resistance, and VEGF levels compared to those with euthyroidism. In addition, Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR), insulin resistance, and VEGF levels were significant predictors of SCH.

Hepatocyte-specific PKC beta deficiency protects against high-fat diet-induced nonalcoholic hepatic steatosis

Yaoling Shu et al.

Summary: Protein kinase C beta (PKC beta) plays a critical role in energy metabolism and adaptation to environmental and nutritional stimuli, particularly in the development of hepatic steatosis induced by high-fat diet. The hepatocyte-specific PKC beta deficiency offers protection against hepatic steatosis without affecting insulin sensitivity.

Protein kinase N1 promotes proliferation and invasion of liver cancer

Summary: PKN1 is highly expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma and positively correlates with histological grading, Ki67 expression, and MVD. Inhibition of PKN1 expression can reduce proliferation and invasion of liver cancer cells and enhance apoptosis.

Contributions of Sodium-Hydrogen Exchanger 1 and Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinases to Enhanced Retinal Venular Constriction to Endothelin-1 in Diabetes

Yen-Lin Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that extracellular Ca2+ entry and activation of JNK play a key role in retinal venular constriction to ET-1, while diabetes enhances venular constriction to ET-1, influenced by the activation of p38 MAPK and NHE1. Treatments targeting these vascular molecules may alleviate retinal complications in early diabetes.

Serine/threonine kinase 17b (STK17B) signalling regulates Purkinje cell dendritic development and is altered in multiple spinocerebellar ataxias

Qin-Wei Wu et al.

Summary: STK17B is strongly expressed in cerebellar Purkinje cells and is regulated by PKC phosphorylation. It acts as a downstream effector of PKC, influencing the morphological changes of Purkinje cells and possibly playing a role in the pathology of SCAs.

Summary: Melatonin has protective effects on the inner blood-retinal barrier in diabetic retinopathy by regulating the expression of inflammatory factors and tight junction proteins. This study provides insights into the development of melatonin-based therapy for diabetic retinopathy.
