Four weeks of electrical stimulation improves glucose tolerance in a sedentary overweight or obese Hispanic population

Michelle J. Galvan et al.

Summary: This study found that 4 weeks of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) can significantly improve glucose tolerance in overweight or obese sedentary individuals, but has no effect on substrate utilization and muscle mass.

Albumin knockout mice exhibit reduced plasma free fatty acid concentration and enhanced insulin sensitivity

Afsoun Abdollahi et al.

Summary: This study found that lack of serum albumin leads to decreased plasma FFA concentration, reduced hepatic lipid storage, and abnormal glucose metabolism. However, it does not affect whole body fat oxidation and exercise performance. The changes in lipid and glucose metabolism are accompanied by decreased expression of hepatic perilipin-2 and increased expression of adiponectin and glucose transporter-4 in adipose tissue.

Summary: A study in a semi-mountainous area of Japan found that daily physical activity may be more effective in preventing metabolic syndrome among middle-aged and older residents compared to exercise.

Effect of electromyostimulation on intramyocellular lipids of the vastus lateralis in older adults: a randomized controlled trial

Maya Hioki et al.

Summary: This study showed that a single bout of electromyostimulation (EMS) intervention did not significantly affect intramyocellular lipid (IMCL) content in older adults, but did lead to a significant reduction in plasma glucose levels. This suggests that EMS may not directly impact IMCL content but may have potential benefits for improving insulin sensitivity through glucose regulation.
