Biodegradation and Photodegradation of Vegetation-Derived Dissolved Organic Matter in Tidal Marsh Ecosystems

Sydney Shelton et al.

Summary: Tidal wetland plants are a significant source of DOM in coastal ecosystems, with senescent plants leaching more DOC and degrading slower than fresh plants. Colored DOM is less bioavailable than non-colored material, and the species composition of marshes impacts the quantity and quality of exported DOC. Microbes combined with UV impact the degradation of DOM differently from microbes alone.

Dissolved organic carbon sorption dynamics in tidal marsh soils

Andrew J. Pinsonneault et al.

Summary: The study suggests that tidal marsh soils act as a regulator for DOC exchange, with organic carbon content and mineral phase composition playing key roles. Results show that soil sorption capacity and DOC binding affinity are influenced by salinity levels, with a strong mineralogical control on tidal marsh sorption dynamics. Initial natively sorbed organic carbon and poorly crystalline iron mineral content also play important roles in these dynamics.

Particulate and Dissolved Organic Matter in Stormwater Runoff Influences Oxygen Demand in Urbanized Headwater Catchments

Kelly M. McCabe et al.

Summary: Increasing inputs of organic matter driven by urbanization have led to declining dissolved oxygen concentrations in coastal ecosystems globally. Stormwater has been found to be a significant source of labile organic matter to receiving waters, particularly during the initial phase of runoff. Managing episodic stormwater discharge, especially particulate organic matter, is crucial for mitigating dissolved oxygen impairment in larger downstream systems.

Carbon Pools Differ in Source and Temporal Patterns in a Tidal Marsh Creek System of the York River, VA Estuary

Amanda L. J. Knobloch et al.

Summary: Estuarine ecosystems, including tidal marsh creek systems, are important hotspots of carbon cycling, yet the magnitude and timescales of carbon concentration variations in these environments remain poorly understood. This study identified temporal patterns in carbon pools in a tidal marsh creek and found that different drivers influenced the concentrations of various carbon pools. Suspended solids and chlorophyll-a were the best predictors of POC concentrations, while CDOM was the best predictor of DOC, and percent freshwater was the best predictor of DIC.

Summary: This study used multi-band satellite data to investigate the dynamics of dissolved organic carbon in tidal-influenced marshes, revealing the importance of these ecosystems and their impact on the larger ecosystem. The findings offer crucial data support for a better understanding of the ecological functions of estuarine wetlands.

Relationships between dissolved black carbon and dissolved organic matter in streams

Youhei Yamashita et al.

Summary: Atmospheric deposition of soot is likely a major source of dissolved black carbon (DBC) in streams, which is linearly related to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration. The quality of DBC correlates with qualitative parameters of bulk dissolved organic matter (DOM), indicating a linkage between the transfer mechanism of soot-derived DBC and high-molecular-weight aromatic DOM.
