Protecting the global ocean for biodiversity, food and climate

Enric Sala et al.

Summary: The ocean is facing threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services, with only a small percentage highly protected in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) due to conflicts with fisheries and other uses. Developing a flexible conservation planning framework to prioritize highly protected MPAs in areas with multiple benefits could substantially increase ocean protection and address global issues of biodiversity, food security, and climate action.

Increased connectivity and depth improve the effectiveness of marine reserves

Jordan S. Goetze et al.

Summary: Marine reserves play a key role in conserving marine biodiversity, with studies showing increased abundance and biomass of fished species within protected areas. However, the effectiveness of protection varies among reserves, with factors like connectivity and depth influencing the outcomes. Consideration of these factors is important for optimizing the benefits of marine reserves over time.

Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management works-How switching from mobile to static fishing gear improves populations of fished and non-fished species inside a marine-protected area

Bede F. R. Davies et al.

Summary: The Lyme Bay marine-protected area, designated in 2008, is an example of a whole-site approach to management for reef biodiversity recovery and protection. By excluding bottom towed fishing and allowing less destructive fishing methods, the MPA has shown increases in taxa and total abundance of fish populations. This approach highlights the importance of protecting a mosaic of benthic habitats through protection of sessile organisms in maintaining sustainable fisheries and conserving important species.
