Deciphering effects of humic acid in landfill leachate on the simultaneous nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) system from performance, electron transfer and microbial community

Yinuo Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of humic acid (HA) on the Simultaneous nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) system for landfill leachate treatment. HA initially inhibited NH4+-N removal efficiency but the inhibition was released after system adaption. The study revealed the mechanisms of HA inhibition release, including efficient HA biodegradation, enhanced electron transfer efficiency, and improved metabolic division of microbial communities. These findings provide insights for the treatment of landfill leachate using the SNAD system.

Simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification in an upflow microaerobic membrane bioreactor treating middle concentration of ammonia nitrogen wastewater with low COD/TN ratio

Bensheng Su et al.

Summary: This study investigated the rapid start-up and operation of a simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification (SNAD) process using synthetic wastewater in a novel upflow microaerobic membrane bioreactor (UMMBR). The results showed that the UMMBR with high sludge concentration and upflow mode facilitated the establishment of anaerobic zones for anammox, and the presence of carmine granules indicated the occurrence of the SNAD process. Anammox bacteria and short-cut denitrification bacteria played important roles in total nitrogen removal. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed the microbial community structure of nitrifying organisms.

A review on characterizing the metabolite property of anammox sludge by spectroscopy

Zhi-Qi Ren et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the research progress on characterizing the intracellular and extracellular metabolites of anammox sludge through spectroscopic techniques. The correlation between anammox sludge activity and its key metabolites was analyzed. The limitations and future prospects of applying spectral analytical techniques for anammox bioreactor monitoring were discussed. This review provides valuable information for both scientific study and engineering application of anammox-based nitrogen removal technology.

Challenges, solutions and prospects of mainstream anammox-based process for municipal wastewater treatment

Lisheng Wang et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the challenges and solutions of mainstream anammox-based process by reviewing the literature of the past decade. The slow growth rate of anammox bacteria and the need for enhancing bacteria retention are identified as the main challenges. Various methods to culture anammox bacteria and improve their activity are discussed. Other challenges include the elimination of nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and achieving the ideal ratio of NH4+ and NO2-. To overcome these challenges, composite control strategies based on low sludge retention time (SRT) and limited aeration are suggested. Interference from low temperature and influent components in actual wastewater treatment is addressed, as well as the use of coupling processes to reduce nitrate concentration in the effluent. The paper concludes with future prospects for the mainstream anammox-based process.

Successful enrichment of anammox consortium in a single-stage reactor at full-scale: The difference in response of functional genes and transcriptional expressions

Qianwen Sui et al.

Summary: The study successfully enriched an Anammox consortium in a full-scale single-stage reactor, with multiple low doses of NaNO2 stimulating immediate responses of amoA and hzsA transcripts. This led to high growth rates of these genes and improved total nitrogen removal efficiency.

Achieving simultaneous nitritation, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) in an integrated fixed-biofilm activated sludge (IFAS) reactor: Quickly culturing self-generated anammox bacteria

Yeqi Du et al.

Summary: In this study, simultaneous nitritation, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) was quickly established in an integrated fixed-biofilm activated sludge (IFAS) reactor to treat high-ammonia municipal wastewater. The results showed high removal efficiencies of total nitrogen and chemical oxygen demand, and high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed the presence of anammox bacteria and ammonia oxidizing bacteria in the system.
