Investigation of Adsorption Kinetics for Per- and Poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) Adsorption onto Powder Activated Carbon (PAC) in the Competing Systems

Heejong Son et al.

Summary: Batch kinetic tests were conducted on nine PFASs, and pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models were used to determine the rate constants. The effects of carbon chain length and adsorption surface area on the competing conditions were evaluated. The results showed that the linear model in the pseudo-first-order kinetic model included exceptional sample points, while the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more suitable. In addition, the impact of intraparticle diffusion on adsorption was not significant.

Rapid Removal of Perfluoroalkanesulfonates from Water by β-Cyclodextrin Covalent Organic Frameworks

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, four beta-cyclodextrin covalent organic frameworks (beta-CD-COFs) were developed as highly effective adsorbents for the removal of perfluoroalkanesulfonates (PFSAs) from water. These beta-CD-COFs exhibited rapid adsorption rates and high capacities for PFSAs, outperforming traditional materials. Density functional theory calculations showed high selectivity of beta-CD-COFs for PFSAs, highlighting their potential application as PFAS adsorbents with good reusability in water or wastewater treatment.

Summary: PFAS are widely used in consumer and industrial applications worldwide, with monitoring studies in WWTPs mainly focused on China, Europe, and North America. Short and long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids are widely detected in WWTP influents and effluents, with most WWTPs exhibiting low removal efficiencies for PFAS and biodegradation being the primary mechanism for PFAS transformation in WWTPs.
