Extracellular polymeric substances of acidophilic microorganisms play a crucial role in heavy metal ions adsorption

M. Li et al.

Summary: This study found that EPS enhanced the adsorption of heavy metal ions by acidophilic microorganisms by increasing their buffering capacities and protonation/deprotonation abilities, providing theoretical support for the treatment of heavy metal ions in acid mine drainage by acidophiles.

Contrasting detoxification mechanisms of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under Cd and Pb stress

Chonghua Li et al.

Summary: Research shows that C. reinhardtii is more tolerant to Pb than Cd, with significant increases in extracellular and intracellular substances such as EPS under Cd and Pb treatments. Various EPS functional groups are involved in interactions with Cd and Pb. The removal rates of Cd and Pb by C. reinhardtii exceed 50%, with adsorption dominating in low-Cd treatments and absorption dominating at low Pb concentrations.

Sorption fractionation of bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on mineral surfaces and associated effects on phenanthrene sorption to EPS-mineral complexes

Yiqun Chen et al.

Summary: Microbial EPS are an important source of labile component in natural organic matter, and their sorption behavior to mineral surfaces can significantly affect the sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminants. The type and surface properties of minerals, as well as the biological source of EPS, play key roles in sorption fractionation of EPS on minerals and ultimately impact the sorption affinity of apolar HOCs to EPS-mineral complexes.EPS-mineral complexes exhibited larger sorption coefficients than pristine EPS, indicating that sorptive interactions were facilitated by sorbed EPS on mineral surfaces.

Response of anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge to residual ferric ions

Zhang-Wei He et al.

Summary: The study found that residual ferric ions had significant effects on the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge, with different concentrations of FI leading to varying impacts on methane production and short chain fatty acids accumulation. Low FI levels enhanced methane production, while high FI levels inhibited acidogenesis and methanogenesis.

Improvement of zinc bioleaching from a zinc flotation concentrate using mechanical activation

Ali Zahiri et al.

Summary: The effects of mechanical activation and pyrite addition on the bacterial and electrochemical aspects of zinc bioleaching from a sulphide concentrate were evaluated in this study. Mechanical activation increased zinc bioleaching by enhancing contact area of target minerals and changing mineral structure. Additionally, electrochemical analysis confirmed that mechanical activation significantly increased the rate of sphalerite anodic oxidation.

Generation behavior of extracellular polymeric substances and its correlation with extraction efficiency of valuable metals and change of process parameters during bioleaching of spent petroleum catalyst

Huichao Chu et al.

Summary: The study highlights the important role of EPS in bioleaching of spent catalyst, with humus-like substances and protein-like substances being the main components. Humus-like substances show a significant positive correlation with bioleaching efficiencies of Co and Mo, impacting the bioleaching process to a greater extent.
