Phosphorus recovery from pig manure: Dissolution of struvite and formation of calcium phosphate granules during anaerobic digestion with calcium addition

Chris Schott et al.

Summary: In this study, the recovery of phosphorus from pig manure was achieved by adding calcium during anaerobic treatment. The addition of calcium showed positive effects on treatment stability and efficiency, resulting in increased phosphorus removal and the formation of calcium phosphate granules. This study highlights the potential of calcium addition for enhancing pig manure treatment and enabling efficient phosphorus recovery.

Calcium-modified granular attapulgite removed phosphorus from synthetic wastewater containing low-strength phosphorus

Na Lv et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of a simple and recyclable adsorbent to remove low-concentration phosphorus from water. The adsorption mechanism was investigated, and it was found that Ca-GAT performed well in removing phosphorus when the solution pH was in the range of 5-10. The presence of competing anions did not significantly affect the adsorption capacity of Ca-GAT. The phosphorus was mainly removed through the formation of Ca-phosphorus precipitation.

Increasing the hydrophyte removal rate of dissolved inorganic phosphorus using a novel Fe-Mg-loaded activated carbon hydroponic substrate with adsorption-release dual functions

Puliang Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, a hydroponic substrate prepared from granular activated carbon loaded with nanoiron-magnesium hydroxide (AC-Fe-Mg) was developed to address the low phosphorus removal efficiency in plant floating beds. The AC-Fe-Mg exhibited superior adsorption and release ability for phosphorus and when combined with I. pseudacorus L., achieved a high phosphorus removal rate. The AC-Fe-Mg provided continuous and stable phosphorus to the plants, effectively controlling and removing dissolved inorganic phosphorus.

Nano-CaCO3 templated porous carbons anchored with Fe single atoms enable high-efficiency N2 electroreduction to NH3

Xiaobo Ma et al.

Summary: The traditional Haber-Bosch N-2 fixation process is problematic due to harsh conditions and CO2 emissions. In contrast, electroreduction of N-2 to NH3 using water as the reducing agent has gained attention. The researchers developed a nano-CaCO3 template route to synthesize Fe, N co-doped porous carbon materials, which showed promising performance for the electrocatalytic reduction of N-2 to NH3.

Research advances of the phosphorus-accumulating organisms of Candidatus Accumulibacter, Dechloromonas and Tetrasphaera: Metabolic mechanisms, applications and influencing factors

Weihua Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the metabolic mechanisms, process applications, community abundance, and influencing factors of phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) in wastewater treatment. It identifies novel PAOs, such as Dechloromonas and Tetrasphaera, which can remove phosphorus through different metabolic pathways. Dechloromonas can achieve simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in an anoxic environment, reducing carbon source requirements and energy consumption.

Magnesium supplementation for improved struvite recovery from dairy lagoon wastewater

Alon Rabinovich et al.

Summary: The study investigated the recovery of phosphate as struvite from dairy lagoon wastewater, demonstrating that increasing magnesium concentration can reduce thermal losses of NH4-N and decrease the sorption of micronutrients in the recovered solids. This suggests that lower magnesium concentrations during phosphate recovery can be beneficial for increasing micronutrient content and reducing NH4-N thermal losses in the produced struvite fertilizer.
