Testing the role of economic complexity on the ecological footprint in China: a nonparametric causality-in-quantiles approach

Seyi Saint Akadiri et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of economic complexity, nonrenewable energy, and renewable energy consumption on the ecological footprint in China. The results show that renewable energy, non-renewable energy use, economic growth, and economic complexity have a positive effect on the ecological footprint. In addition, these factors can significantly predict variations in the ecological footprint at different quantiles. It suggests that policymakers should focus on promoting the transition to more eco-friendly energy sources and technologies to achieve sustainable development goals.

The effects of environmental degradation on agriculture: Evidence from European countries

Duojiao Tan et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of environmental degradation, such as biodiversity loss, deforestation, and agricultural emissions, on agricultural production as well as cereal and vegetable production in 35 European countries. The results show that biodiversity loss harms agricultural, cereal, and vegetable production, while an increase in forest area positively affects cereal and vegetable production. Agricultural emissions do not significantly affect the three variables, but they have a negative effect on cereal production and a positive impact on vegetable production. Additionally, renewable energy use, political stability, and women empowerment have positive and significant impacts on all three dependent variables, while e-governance significantly and positively affects agricultural and vegetable production. Social progress has a positive but insignificant effect on the dependent variables. The study provides important policy implications for the agricultural sector in Europe.

Role of technological innovation and globalization in BRICS economies: policy towards environmental sustainability

Abraham Ayobamiji Awosusi et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of political risk, globalization, and technological innovation on the ecological footprint in the BRICS economies. The findings suggest that economic growth, non-renewable energy usage, political risk, and technological innovation increase the ecological footprint, while globalization decreases it significantly. The study also confirms the bidirectional causal relationship between ecological footprint and the regressors of technological innovation, globalization, non-renewable energy, and economic growth, with a one-way causal connection from ecological footprint to political risk. The study highlights the importance of policymakers coordinating efforts to address the serious environmental deterioration in the BRICS economies.

Does it take international integration of natural resources to ascend the ladder of environmental quality in the newly industrialized countries?

Tomiwa Sunday Adebayo et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the data of ten newly industrialized countries (NICs) between 1990 and 2018. The results show that natural resource rent is detrimental to the global goal of carbon neutrality. However, globalization can moderate this effect, and there is a positive correlation between economic growth and environmental quality. Additionally, renewable energy utilization and globalization independently promote environmental quality in these countries.

Revealing the nexus between tourism development and CO2 emissions in Asia: does asymmetry matter?

Kaixin Wangzhou et al.

Summary: Asia is a rapidly growing region in terms of tourism, economic growth, and CO2 emissions. However, the relationship between tourism and CO2 emissions is not well understood. This study reveals that an increase in tourism arrivals leads to an increase in CO2 emissions, while a negative shock also increases CO2 emissions in the long term. Additionally, the negative shock has a greater impact on CO2 emissions than the positive shock in Asia. The findings suggest that tourism receipts play a significant role in maintaining the stability of CO2 emissions in Asian economies. It is recommended for authorities to develop and promote green international tourism activities in Asia.
