The occurrence of geogenic fluoride in shallow aquifers of Kenya Rift Valley and its implications in groundwater management

Njagi Felix Mwiathi et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the occurrence and origins of high-fluoride groundwater in regions with volcanic bedrocks, using Kenya Rift Valley as a case study. It finds that fluoride in groundwater is mainly derived from the weathering of volcanic rocks, which leads to high fluoride concentrations in shallow groundwater. The alkaline condition and clay minerals play a crucial role in controlling fluoride release and accumulation in these groundwater systems.

Zhenyan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical characteristics, sources of dissolved substances, hydrogeochemical processes, and the differences between two areas of groundwater in the Western Yellow Sea coast of China. The study finds that mineral dissolution and seawater intrusion are the major sources of dissolved substances in the groundwater, with different impacts on the two areas. The study also highlights the importance of preventing seawater intrusion and ensuring drinking water safety.

Factors controlling groundwater chemical evolution with the impact of reduced exploitation

Fei Liu et al.

Summary: The ongoing groundwater exploitation reduction (GWER) project in the North China Plain has led to changes in the hydraulic and chemical signals of the aquifers. This study investigated the impact of natural factors and human activities on groundwater chemistry in the Heilonggang region, a pilot area for the GWER project. The results showed that shallow aquifers were dominated by Na+ and mixed anions, while deep aquifers were characterized by Na-Cl and Na-SO4. The evolution of groundwater chemistry was influenced by water-rock interaction, evaporation, and cation exchange. The study also found that human interventions, such as groundwater pumping reduction and industrial, agricultural, and domestic sewage activities, affected the chemical composition of shallow groundwater. The GWER project indirectly improved the quality of shallow aquifers by lowering ion concentrations and salinity. The study highlights the importance of understanding groundwater chemical evolution in regions undergoing groundwater exploitation reduction and its implications for sustainable groundwater management strategies in similar basins worldwide.

Ziyue Yin et al.

Summary: This study utilized self-organizing maps to analyze the spatiotemporal variations of groundwater hydrochemical characteristics in the Dagu River Basin. The results showed fluctuations in total dissolved solids and nitrate concentrations in the basin due to seasonal changes and environmental pollution interference. The study suggested that natural factors and human activities played vital roles in controlling the regional groundwater evolution.

Emmanuel Daanoba Sunkari et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of using different ionic ratios, multivariate statistical, and geochemical modeling approaches to understand groundwater evolution and trace salinization in semi-arid basin aquifers. Groundwater chemistry is primarily controlled by water-rock interaction, ion exchange reactions, weathering, salinization, and anthropogenic activities. The prevalence of salinization in the aquifer system, especially in the southwestern part of the basin, is revealed through different ionic ratio plots and spatial distribution maps.

Hydrogeochemical evidence for fluoride behavior in groundwater and the associated risk to human health for a large irrigation plain in the Yellow River Basin

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: A hydrochemical analysis of groundwater in the Guanzhong Plain in China identified factors influencing fluoride concentrations in different regions. The study found that carbonate weathering was the main factor in low-fluoride groundwater, while evaporate dissolution and evaporation were key factors in high-fluoride zones. Different forces, such as irrigation-induced dilution and mineral adsorption, were responsible for fluoride behavior in high-fluoride groundwater zones, which had a distinct major ion chemistry. This research enhances our understanding of fluoride dynamics in groundwater and the impact of irrigation practices on fluoride concentrations.
