Fate of selected pharmaceuticals in hospital and municipal wastewater effluent: occurrence, removal, and environmental risk assessment

Arzu Ulvi et al.

Summary: This study examined the concentrations and distribution of pharmaceuticals in the influent and effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant and hospital effluents. It found that beta-blockers and psychiatric drugs were detected in high concentrations in the wastewater samples, with hospitals contributing 2-4% of total pharmaceuticals in the plant. The removal of pharmaceuticals in the treatment plant ranged from 23% to 54%.

Photocatalytic degradation of cefixime using visible light-driven Z-scheme ZnO nanorod/Zn2TiO4/GO heterostructure

Elham Sadat Behineh et al.

Summary: A ZnO nanorod/Zn2TiO4/GO heterostructure with enhanced charge transfer capability was synthesized, and its photocatalytic activity for Cefixime removal under visible light was evaluated. The optimized three-component composite showed the highest degradation rate and total organic carbon removal rate. The improved photocatalytic properties were attributed to the reduction of electron-hole pair recombination rate, successful interfacial charge transfers, and increased visible light reception in the Z-scheme system.

Quick adsorption followed by lengthy photodegradation using FeNi3@SiO2@ZnO: A promising method for complete removal of penicillin G from wastewater

Mohammad Kamranifar et al.

Summary: The FeNi3@SiO2@ZnO nanoparticles showed good adsorption and photodegradation performance for penicillin G in aqueous solutions, with the potential for achieving high removal efficiencies by adjusting the catalyst concentration and experimental conditions. Continuous treatment through adsorption and photodegradation under specific conditions could achieve a 100% removal efficiency for PNG. Superoxide anion radicals played a significant role in the photodegradation of PNG.
