Secondary Formation and Impacts of Gaseous Nitro-Phenolic Compounds in the Continental Outflow Observed at a Background Site in South China

Yi Chen et al.

Summary: Nitro-phenolic compounds (NPs) have been receiving increasing attention due to their health risks and impacts on visibility and atmospheric chemistry. This study continuously measured 18 gaseous NPs at a background site in South China and found abundant NPs in the continental outflows from East Asia. The results showed that the NPs primarily originated from the secondary formation of transported aromatics, with daytime peaks for mono-NPs and nighttime enrichments of di-NPs and Cl-substituted NPs. The study also highlighted the significant role of NO3· chemistry in the formation of NPs.

Light absorption properties and molecular compositions of water-soluble and methanol-soluble organic carbon emitted from wood pyrolysis and combustion

Ranran Zhao et al.

Summary: Organic carbon (OC) emitted from biomass burning plays a crucial role in the global radiation budget. This study investigated the properties of primary OC emitted from wood pyrolysis and combustion under different atmospheres. The results showed that methanol-soluble OC (MSOC) has higher light absorption efficiency compared to water-soluble OC (WSOC), especially for OC emitted from the nitrogen pyrolysis atmosphere. The molecular compositions of MSOC also exhibited higher values of molecular weight, unsaturation, and aromaticity under nitrogen atmosphere. In addition, the light absorption efficiency was positively correlated with molecular weight, unsaturation, and aromaticity, while negatively correlated with elemental ratios of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur.

Characteristics and evolution of brown carbon in western United States wildfires

Linghan Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics and evolution of brown carbon (BrC) associated with aerosol particles during wildfires in the western United States. Two measurement methods were employed, one using solvent extracts and the other using in situ aerosol particle light absorption measurements. The results show a relationship between BrC absorption and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. The study also reveals the complex evolution of BrC in the first 8 hours after emission, including enhancements, depletions, or constant levels. Ozone and temperature were found to be influential factors in the formation and evolution of BrC.

Neeraj Rastogi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diurnal variability of absorption characteristics of brown carbon at different wavelengths, discussing the absorption coefficient, mass absorption efficiency, and absorption angstrom exponent of BrC. The findings revealed that BrC shows minimum absorption in the afternoon, and a fraction of BrC may be associated with trash burning.

Summary: The experiments found that even after aging, most BrC is still insoluble in water. The mass absorption efficiency of primary organic aerosol (POA) was significantly higher than that of aged organic aerosol (SOA). Residential coal combustion emissions were among the strongest absorbing BrC organics among anthropogenic sources.

Evolution of Organic Aerosol From Wood Smoke Influenced by Burning Phase and Solar Radiation

Siyuan Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the evolution of plumes from wood burning in real atmospheric conditions, finding that smoldering plumes produce secondary organic aerosols at a faster rate compared to flaming plumes, with a higher oxygen-to-carbon ratio. Flaming plumes had higher emissions of black carbon and NOx, while smoldering plumes were dominated by organic aerosol and had lower NOx emissions, resulting in contrasting trends in the oxidation of organic aerosols.

Aging of Atmospheric Brown Carbon Aerosol

Rachel F. Hems et al.

Summary: Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) aerosol is emitted by numerous primary sources and formed by secondary sources, being chemically complex. As BrC aerosol ages through various chemical and physical processes in the atmosphere, its chemical composition and optical properties change significantly, impacting climate. Research in the past decade has expanded our understanding of BrC reactions in both gas and condensed phases, with a focus on gas phase reactions leading to BrC formation, aqueous and in-cloud processes, and aerosol particle reactions.

Strong Impacts of Legitimate Open Burning on Brown Carbon Aerosol in Northeast China

Summary: The study found that agricultural fires were the main driver for elevated BrC levels, with lower light absorbance compared to residential burning of crop residues. Agricultural fire emissions also led to overestimation of elemental carbon (EC) mass. This study indicates that the new open burning policy may not be successful in improving air quality or mitigating climate change.
