Rates and Yields of Unimolecular Reactions Producing Highly Oxidized Peroxy Radicals in the OH-Induced Autoxidation of α-Pinene, β-Pinene, and Limonene

Ivan R. Piletic et al.

Summary: Recent ambient atmospheric measurements have detected highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) which are a consequence of autoxidation processes occurring at ambient temperatures. In this work, the autoxidation mechanisms of α-pinene, β-pinene, and limonene following initial OH oxidation and three successive O-2 additions are examined using density functional theory (DFT) to understand what accounts for the disparity. The study reveals that OH addition reactions are the main route to HOMs for all three monoterpenes.

Summary: The study investigates the NO3. oxidation of five phenolic derivatives, revealing previously unrecognized nitro-containing products. These newly discovered products may play an important role in the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) and contribute to light absorption in the atmosphere.

Unimolecular Reactions Following Indoor and Outdoor Limonene Ozonolysis

Jing Chen et al.

Summary: Limonene, a compound with significant biogenic emissions and widely used in cleaning products, can lead to substantial indoor emissions. Studies suggest that the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) from limonene oxidation is critical for indoor air quality, although the mechanisms for SOA formation from limonene ozonolysis are not well understood.

Isolating a-Pinene Ozonolysis Pathways Reveals New Insights into Peroxy Radical Chemistry and Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation

Zixu Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the ozonolysis of alpha-pinene and its impact on the formation of new particles and secondary organic aerosols in the atmosphere. Experimental measurements show that Criegee intermediates with a terminal methyl ketone undergo autoxidation 20 times faster than those with a terminal aldehyde, providing insights into the detailed mechanisms of particle formation. The research also suggests that structurally different Criegee intermediates can form constituents with identical structures, indicating diverse isomerization pathways that contribute to the formation of secondary organic aerosols.

Secondary Ion Chemistry Mediated by Ozone and Acidic Organic Molecules in Iodide-Adduct Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry

Wen Zhang et al.

Summary: Iodide-adduct chemical ionization mass spectrometry (I-CIMS) is widely used in atmospheric chemistry to detect oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) in real time. The study reports secondary ion chemistry from interactions between strong oxygen donors and acidic OVOCs in I-CIMS, which can lead to misinterpretations of gas-phase products' compositions and distributions. However, the varying degrees of signal change in response to secondary ion chemistry may provide clues to OVOCs' functionalities.

A structure activity relationship for ring closure reactions in unsaturated alkylperoxy radicals

L. Vereecken et al.

Summary: Terpenoids are important volatile organic compounds emitted into the atmosphere, where they undergo ring closure reactions in the troposphere, competing in low-NOx environments and allowing for continued autoxidation. Quantum chemical and theoretical kinetic studies show that these reactions are usually fast, with some analysis on the impact of oxygenated substituents. H-migration in cycloperoxide peroxy radicals is found to be slower for unsubstituted RO2 radicals, while in cycloperoxide alkoxy radicals, the migration of H-atoms on the ring is slower and typically not competitive against decomposition reactions.

Summary: The study found that limonene ozonolysis forms highly energized CIs* and generates Limona-ketone. The percentages of different isomerization routes from CIs* to VHPs, dioxirane, and SOZs are 0.59:0.18:0.14, with an overall yield of OH radicals at 0.61.
