Analysis of Microplastics in Human Feces Reveals a Correlation between Fecal Microplastics and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Status

Zehua Yan et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentration of fecal microplastics in patients with inflammatory bowel disease was significantly higher than in healthy individuals, with poly(ethylene terephthalate) and polyamide being the main components in the feces. A positive correlation between fecal microplastics concentration and the severity of IBD was also observed. Plastic packaging of drinking water and food, as well as dust exposure, were identified as important sources of human exposure to microplastics.

Comparing the effects of polystyrene microplastics exposure on reproduction and fertility in male and female mice

Zhaolan Wei et al.

Summary: Exposure to microplastics has negative effects on the reproductive systems and fertility of mice. Male mice experience reduced sperm quantity and increased sperm deformity, while female mice experience decreased ovary size and follicle number. Additionally, microplastic exposure alters hormone levels and leads to reduced pregnancy rates and fewer embryos in mice.

Discovery and quantification of plastic particle pollution in human blood

Heather A. Leslie et al.

Summary: Plastic particles are widespread pollutants in the environment and food chain, and this study successfully developed a method to measure the presence of plastic particles in human blood. The study found four high production volume polymers in blood samples and demonstrated that plastic particles can be taken up by the human bloodstream.

Polystyrene microplastics induced male reproductive toxicity in mice

Haibo Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on male reproductive systems in mice. The results showed that PS-MPs accumulated in the testis, entered testicular cells, and led to decreased sperm quality and testosterone levels. Additionally, PS-MPs induced testicular inflammation and disruption of the blood-testis barrier, demonstrating the potential reproductive dysfunctions caused by microplastics.

Summary: The study found that contaminated microplastics can transport phthalate esters into the tissues of mice, leading to increased reproductive toxicity. The accumulation of microplastics primarily occurs in the gut and liver, impacting sperm physiology and spermatogenesis.

Nanoplastic-Induced Genotoxicity and Intestinal Damage in Freshwater Benthic Clams (Corbicula fluminea): Comparison with Microplastics

Zhenling Li et al.

Summary: The study found that nanoplastics preferentially trigger processes related to cellular components and induce apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway in various tissues, especially in indirectly contacted tissues, while microplastics induce innate immune response and activate complement and coagulation cascades. Both types of plastics can cause inflammation and epithelial damage in the intestines, and notably alter the gut microbial community structure. Unlike microplastics, the impact of nanoplastics on the intestinal microflora is limited, but it can cause more severe damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier.

Effect of microplastics on aquatic biota: A hormetic perspective

Tao Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics can enhance biological performance and reduce oxidative stress biomarkers in aquatic organisms at environmentally relevant concentrations. The responses varied among different biological endpoints, with stimulatory effects observed in consumption, growth, reproduction, and survival. The meta-regression analysis showed that the responses to MPs were independent of habitat, MP characteristics, and exposure duration. The findings suggest that exposure to MPs at low and high concentrations may lead to opposite or non-monotonic responses in aquatic biota.
