Future wind and wave energy resources and exploitability in the Mediterranean Sea by 2100

Andrea Lira-Loarca et al.

Summary: This study presents a state-of-the-art regional assessment of future wind and wave energy resources in the Mediterranean Sea and projected changes under the climate change scenario RCP8.5. Results show impacts of climate change on wind and wave power potential, with a robust decrease in suitable regions for coupled systems during fall and winter. Additionally, the Alboran Sea emerges as a probable suitable area for coupled systems under RCP8.5.

Trends and variability of ocean waves under RCP8.5 emission scenario in the Mediterranean Sea

Francesco De Leo et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the Mediterranean Sea, analyzing wave climate changes using an ensemble of 7 models under emission scenario RCP8.5. The results show a decreasing trend in significant wave height and mean period, while wave directions may shift slightly eastward.

Projected wave climate temporal variability due to climate change

Andrea Lira Loarca et al.

Summary: This study presents a new method for analyzing multi-model multivariate wave climate time series projections at different temporal scales, applied near the Mediterranean Spanish coast. Results indicate significant differences between projected wave climate and hindcast data, including seasonal variations and changes in energetic content.

Wind Waves in the Mediterranean Sea: An ERA5 Reanalysis Wind-Based Climatology

Francesco Barbariol et al.

Summary: This study presents a climatology of wind waves in the Mediterranean Sea based on a 40-year wave hindcast. Results show that significant and maximum individual wave heights in the region are decreasing during summer and increasing during winter, with the Scandinavian index variability being the most correlated to the Mediterranean Sea wind-wave variability.

Projections of Directional Spectra Help to Unravel the Future Behavior of Wind Waves

Hector Lobeto et al.

Summary: The study compares present and future wind-wave conditions under a high-emission scenario using a novel approach and finds an increase in energy from Southern Ocean swells globally, which is especially relevant for the west coast of North America. On the other hand, a consistent decrease in the energy of large northern Atlantic swells near the equator is observed.

Summary: The study shows that extreme ocean wave events are changing due to global warming, with increases in extreme wave activity in the high latitudes and tropics of the Southern Hemisphere, and widespread decreases in most of the Northern Hemisphere.
