Soil microorganisms facilitated the electrode-driven trichloroethene dechlorination to ethene by Dehalococcoides species in a bioelectrochemical system

Lingyu Meng et al.

Summary: Bioelectrochemical dechlorination using organohalide-respiring bacteria is a promising technique for remediating contaminated groundwater. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of pre-augmented Dehalococcoides culture in achieving full dechlorination. The addition of Dehalococcoides cells before operating the bioelectrochemical system significantly improved the dechlorination performance.

Perturbation of clopyralid on bio-denitrification and nitrite accumulation: Long-term performance and biological mechanism

Suyun Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential threat of the herbicide clopyralid (CLP) to ecological systems and its impact on the bio-denitrification process. The results show that low concentrations of CLP cause nitrite accumulation initially, while higher concentrations have no further effect after long-term exposure. Mechanistically, CLP reduces nitrite reductase activity and inhibits metabolic activity through oxidative stress and membrane damage, resulting in nitrite accumulation. However, after prolonged acclimation, nitrite accumulation is significantly reduced, possibly due to increased secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that protect microbial cells and improve nitrite reductase activity and metabolic activities. The study also highlights the changes in microbial community biodiversity and richness, with certain microbial species playing a role in protecting against toxic substances and regulating interactions among microorganisms.

Resorcinol as a highly efficient aromatic electron donor in bioelectrochemical system

Li-Hui Yang et al.

Summary: Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are considered a promising technology for accelerating the degradation of aromatic contaminants and energy recovery. This study focused on resorcinol, a key intermediate in aromatics anaerobic biodegradation, and found that it had high efficiencies in BESs possibly due to its easily fermentable properties. Analysis of microbial communities in the biofilm indicated a syntrophic interaction between resorcinol-degrading bacteria (RDB) and anode-respiring bacteria (ARB) contributing to current generation.

Mengqi Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, nano-Fe3O4@activated coke enhanced bio-system (FEBS) was found to efficiently treat aromatic organics in coal pyrolysis wastewater under limited-oxygen conditions. Metagenomic analyses revealed the mechanisms involved in aromatic ring-cleavage and the functional microbiome linkages. FEBS supplementation had the highest organic removal efficiency and maintained high biodegradability, with the degradation processes being driven by Fe3O4 redox reactions and microbial biofilm.
