Recent collapse of crop belts and declining diversity of US agriculture since 1840

Michael S. Crossley et al.

Summary: Over the last century, US agriculture has undergone significant industrialization, resulting in a spatial concentration of crop types and a sharp decline in crop diversity. Despite an increase in total production, the number of counties producing each crop and their total land area have decreased significantly, indicating a greater vulnerability of US food systems to environmental and economic change. The recent collapse of most agricultural belts and the loss of crop diversity suggest a fundamental change in the environmental effects in agriculturally dominated counties.
