Defining biological and biophysical properties of SARS-CoV-2 genetic material in wastewater

Carolyn A. Robinson et al.

Summary: The genetic material of SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in raw wastewater around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, showing high detectability in feces and household wastewater both before and after a positive qPCR test. However, the study found that pasteurization of raw wastewater did not reduce the SARS-CoV-2 signal if RNA was extracted immediately after, with a decrease in signal observed when extraction was delayed. Surprisingly, the recovery of SARS-CoV-2 signal after concentration was consistently higher than that of a control virus, indicating potential differences in the nature of the genetic material detected in wastewater.

Interactions between virus surrogates and sewage sludge vary by viral analyte: Recovery, persistence, and sorption

Wan Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the recovery, survivability, and sorption of four virus surrogates in sewage sludge, leading to the discovery of different elution methods and recovery rates for each virus. The role of the solid fraction of sludge in virus inactivation was also found to be significant. Additionally, the analysis of amino acid sequences revealed that certain viruses could remain viable at lower temperatures, posing an infection risk. These findings contribute to our understanding of the environmental behavior of viruses in sewage sludge and provide a theoretical basis for risk assessment in sludge treatment and disposal.

Survival of SARS-CoV-2 and bovine coronavirus on common surfaces of living environments

Maiko Watanabe et al.

Summary: This study investigated the survival potential of bovine coronavirus (BCoV) and SARS-CoV-2 on porous and non-porous surfaces. It found that non-porous surfaces had shorter virus survival time, while porous surfaces had longer virus survival time, although RNA derived from the virus remained on all surfaces for a longer period. The study suggests that surface structure is not directly related to virus survivability.

Detection and quantification of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater and treated effluents: Surveillance of COVID-19 epidemic in the United Arab Emirates

Shadi W. Hasan et al.

Summary: Testing SARS-CoV-2 viral loads in wastewater in the United Arab Emirates revealed fluctuating levels in different locations, with government precautionary measures correlating with a decrease in viral loads. None of the 11 wastewater treatment plants' effluents tested positive, indicating the efficiency of treatment technologies in degrading the virus and the safety of treated reused water.

Quantitative analysis of SARS-CoV-2 RNA from wastewater solids in communities with low COVID-19 incidence and prevalence

Patrick M. D'Aoust et al.

Summary: In the absence of an effective COVID-19 vaccine, wastewater surveillance has emerged as a potential tool to track community infections. The study found that primary clarified sludge (PCS) samples are more suitable for quantifying SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA, while pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) is considered a potentially useful biomarker for normalizing SARS-CoV-2 signal.

Impacts of different operational temperatures and organic loads in anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and sewage sludge on the fate of SARS-CoV-2

Mohammad Javad Bardi et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of different operational temperatures and organic loads on the fate of SARS-CoV-2 during the anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and sewage sludge. Results showed that higher organic loads led to system instability, while increasing operational temperature promoted more biogas production due to enhanced metabolic activity of bacteria.

Summary: This study presents the decay in genetic material loading of SARS-CoV-2 during wastewater treatment, and evaluates PEG and ultrafiltration as virus concentration methods. The results indicate that the PEG method is more effective in removing inhibitory substances, and the UASB system significantly reduces the genetic loading of SARS-CoV-2.

Possible transmission of viruses from contaminated human feces and sewage: Implications for SARS-CoV-2

Mohamed Elsamadony et al.

Summary: The study discusses concerns related to the presence of viruses in sewage, particularly focusing on the possible transmission routes of SARS-CoV-2. Further research is needed to prevent the spread of the virus, especially in developing countries, where the feces- and sewage-derived transmission routes may be of significance.

Decay of infectious SARS-CoV-2 and surrogates in aquatic environments

Laura Sala-Comorera et al.

Summary: The study found that the persistence of infectious SARS-CoV-2 in water was temperature dependent, with the virus remaining infectious for longer periods in colder temperatures. In contrast, viral RNA was relatively stable. The use of surrogate markers such as bacteriophages MS2 and PMMoV RNA showed significant differences in decay rates compared to SARS-CoV-2 RNA, limiting their effectiveness in assessing the persistence of the virus in the environment.
