Enhanced methane production during long-term UASB operation at high organic loads as enabled by the immobilized Fungi

Qiong Guo et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new strategy to stabilize anaerobic digestion at high organic loading rates (OLR) using Aspergillus sydowii 8L-9-F02 immobilized beads (AEBs). The results show that the reactor with AEBs achieves higher COD removal and methane production compared to the control reactor without AEBs. The presence of AEBs inhibits volatile fatty acids accumulation, stabilizes pH, promotes the production of extracellular polymeric substances, and enhances sludge granulation and settleability. Additionally, AEBs favor the enrichment of methanogenic archaea and improve the efficiency of methanogenic pathways.

New insights into the effect of ethanol and volatile fatty acids proportions on methanogenic activities and pathways

Jin Du et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of intermediates acetate, propionate, and ethanol on methanogenesis. Ethanol was found to be the easiest intermediate to be biodegraded, enhancing methane production rate. Different microbial communities and syntrophic patterns were observed in four reactors, with different bacteria playing important roles in different reactors.

Summary: The study profiled bacterial and fungal communities in kinema, a naturally fermented soybean food from the Eastern Himalayan regions of India, Nepal and Bhutan. Various unique bacterial genera were observed in each country, while no unique fungal genus was found in kinema. Most bacterial species were culturable, while most fungal species were unculturable.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is a promising technology for renewable energy products, but with low economic value and challenging process control. Identifying and discussing intermediates formed in the process can enhance understanding and provide opportunities for improved monitoring, control, and valorization. Key limitations include challenging microbiology cultures, complex feedstocks, and difficult extraction and separation techniques.

Fungal taxonomy and sequence-based nomenclature

Robert Lucking et al.

Summary: Identifying and naming microfungi, especially plant, animal, and human pathogens, remains a challenge. Molecular identification is increasingly used, and environmental metabarcoding is generating a vast amount of sequence data to document global fungal diversity. Solutions for naming taxa known only from sequences are proposed based on bacterial taxonomy methods.

Temperature and microbial interactions drive the deterministic assembly processes in sediments of hot springs

Qing He et al.

Summary: The study found that microbial community assembly in geothermal ecosystems is influenced by stochasticity and biotic interactions, with differences between sediment and water communities in terms of diversity, species-interactions, and community assembly. Sediment communities are primarily governed by heterogeneous selection, while water communities are mainly influenced by undominated stochastic processes and dispersal limitation. Temperature and ferrous iron play a key role in mediating the balance of stochastic and deterministic assembly processes in sediment communities.
