Quantifying the Fractal Dimension and Morphology of Individual Atmospheric Soot Aggregates

Yuner Pang et al.

Summary: The complex morphology of soot aggregates is a major source of uncertainty in evaluating their warming effects in the atmosphere. This study develops a novel image recognition technique to automatically determine the fractal dimension (D-f) of individual soot aggregates from electron microscopy images. The results show significant differences in D-f between soot particles emitted from vehicles, biomass burning, coal burning, urban atmosphere, and rural atmosphere.

Nonlinear Enhancement of Radiative Absorption by Black Carbon in Response to Particle Mixing Structure

Yuanyuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the absorption enhancement of black carbon particles and finds that the diverse mixing structures in individual particles lead to variable absorption enhancement that could hardly be predicted by empirical approximations. The volume proportion of BC embedded in coating determines the absorption enhancement when the particle to BC core diameter ratio is larger than 2.0.

Optical and hygroscopic properties of black carbon influenced by particle microphysics at the top of the anthropogenically polluted boundary layer

Shuo Ding et al.

Summary: This study reveals that black carbon (BC) plays a significant role in modifying the atmospheric dynamics at the top of the polluted planetary boundary layer (PBL) over the continent. The detailed measurements show that BC properties differ between winter and summer, leading to variations in mass absorption cross section and single-scattering albedo, impacting water supersaturation, cloud droplet activation, and indirect radiative effects.
